I was watching this CB antenna mount on EBay.  Bidding started off at $10 with $11 shipping.  The auction ended and I could not believe how much it sold for!!!

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190475098160&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT

I seriously hope that no one from the VRCC bought that mount!!  I know how hard it is to come across one of those mounts, but seriously, you CAN make your own, especially if you want to save a few bucks!!  Here’s the one I made…..  I’ve said it before; if you need one, let me know, hell, I can make it for ½ what they sell for on eBay!!

I've seen people on ebay pay more for a used item than a new one costs.  Amazes me that they have no idea of the value.  Maybe they get caught up in the bidding.  crazy2

The bidding itself can be contagious. I know my competitive streak has kicked in on a few occasions and I've paid more for an item than I had intended. Wasn't idiotic, just overly competitive. Oh well. Supply and demand and all that jazz.

Go to a real live auction if you want to see stupidity.

When my father-in-law passed away we had an auction of 99.9% of his toys from the farm.

I wouldn't have paid $500 for the whole damn lot, with the guns not included, and wanted to toss it all in the ditch we were filling in.    Brother-in-law, he is a $$$$ hungry ba*tard, and told his wife, she was to have an auction.    He is still on the farm and needed some more toys.

We worked for 4 weeks getting the crap all lined up and moved up to the barn yard so as to have an auction.   Oh yes, no firkin help from this Brother-in-law, he was busy.      I was even selling my old Allis Chalmers WD45 Diesel I'd had for about 12 years.    I paid $125.00 for it at auction then and drove it 9 miles home on the gravel.

To make a long story short, it had not been refurbished, but the engine had just had a complete rebuild so it was good for another 10,000 hours.  (LOL).  One of my nephews in Auto/Diesel training at the Community College used it for a grade.  His team did an excellent job with it.     Parts were like $200.  Got to use the College's discount.

It brought $4,390 right out the gate.      We told in the flyer's it was selling 1st and several collectors/dealers were there.

Total $$$$$ from the sale was $24,825.       I bought a few items I wanted, just cause they were dad's, father-in-law.    Like all of his guns and the case for it.  Sure, I paid more for it than I should have, but it had sentimental valve to the wife and I both.    The one gun I really wanted was his goose gun.  10 GA, full choke on a 36" barrel.     Yes sir, it is a long SOB and it takes 2 gun cases to cover it up if it is out of the cabinet.     Had to put a 19" round piece of material over the hole we had to drill in the top of the cabinet to cover the top of the barrell.........        I'll sell the gun for $14,000 no questions asked.

I wouldn't want to put that statement on Craig's list as it would be gone.

My son had a set of STOCK 93 Ford Mustang 4 bolt wheels from his 5 bold conversion.     He was complaining that they were taking up space in his storage shed.    Jokingly I said hey, Craig's list.      He made an ad, asking $500 for the wheels.    The 4th caller bought them sight unseen and was on his way after them while making the call.     He was from Southern MN and started driving toward Des Moines before he called.      Yupper, as you say there is a lot of dummies out there.......

I love ebay myself. But you really have to wonder about people paying top dollar for used parts when you can still get them new. For instance, it is not unusual for used chrome Valk alternator covers to sell for $40! There are some great deals to be had, though...

The only time I ever saw these Cobra radiator side covers (made from billet) on eBay, they got around
15 bids and went for over $500.00... I found mine new in a Honda shop cut-out bin for cheap... I guess
some things are (mostly  Wink ) unobtainable unless you're willing to pay up...

I paid "full price" for these other Cobra doo-dads, I've never seen anyone selling them cheap...

I bailed on the idea of getting Cobra lights when a VRCC member sold me these Rivco ones for a good deal:

A lot of Valkyrie stuff is hard to get, but it makes you wonder when you see someone paying bling prices
on eBay for standard OEM parts that are still available new from any parts place...

There is a used solo rack right now trading at $200 with days left. I think I paid about $60 new eight months ago. I hope the welds on the ebay one are better than mine, because mine ain't that good.

RJ,
i went to an auction were there was a grizzley wood planer for sale.  it was 9 years old, 21" x 6" capacity i believe and could be bought for  around $1200 brand new at the time.  the guy had the original reciet with the manual book and he paid just under $1100.  it sold for $1400 !!!  while standing in line to pay for my black walnut lumber i started talking to a guy about how crazy the pricing was for the auction, and i then said, "how bout  that idiot that bought that planer?" he's says "yep, that would have been me."   Grin Grin  OPPS!!  Grin  i felt bad for the guy!!  but man was that just a jaw dropper!!

I would have to guess that there are a few dealers like one I am familiar with - they can't really be bothered finding the "tough to find" stuff in the 'fiche. Have never tried them with the Valk, but do know sometimes the 1100 Wing was like that.

Plus, I'm sure there are a lot of Valk owners, who don't know that VRCC exists, and how helpful it is, finding parts. If they are "on their own", trying to figure out what parts are available, how to find them, etc, etc, it might make sense that they'd pay way too much, thinking it was the only way to get the parts.

I know I've paid too much for a few things, solely because I wanted them, and it didn't matter to me, I never paid more than I was WILLING to pay, but did pay more than I HAD to pay, finding out after the fact.

But, that certainly doesn't make me an "idiot"....

I also recently managed to find a set of parts, that Big Mike needed, and worked out a deal with him, that, I think, we were both pretty happy with - he ended up with something he had been looking for, which, IMO, would make them quite rare, seeing it was him, and I didn't think I'd ever use, and traded for something that I really wanted, but wasn't sure I had the patience to wait until I got a "great deal" on, and it was a "good deal" for me.

I'm an eBay whore....if I'm not shopping for something, my day is incomplete. uglystupid2

Having said that, there are idiot sellers on there, too. My fav, like I just encountered this morning, are ones who think "North and South America" means from North Dakota to Florida or something. I email for shipping costs to Canada and get "Sorry; we only ship to USA". This morning, I wrote back and explained the meaning of continents versus countries and the value of selecting the correct option in one's listing. DUH!!

I'm not much on negotiation so to be lazy, I'll just pay the price, depending on what the item is and how bad I want it, and call it good.  But I have learned the art of bargin hunting and found out that sometimes you have to wait to get what you want, if you have the patience( this I am STILL working on though) lol  crazy2

I buy 90% of my stuff off ebay or others online sources. I have paid more sometimes for an item than I could have gotten it at a store, but I didn't have to drive all over town looking for it. Waste my time and gas. Then sometimes you get that awesome deal. I sell on Ebay also and yes there are some bidding junkies out there and I'm amazed at what people will pay for things. My wife sold a gallon ziploc of acorns one time on there just to prove people will buy anything. They went for a buck. I thought man I've got tons of acorns. I went out and bagged some up. It didn't take long to realized that picking up acorns was not my calling. 2funny
