I have been collecting parts to do the double bearing mod to my '98 Valk.  Thus far I have gotten an extra rear wheel, axle with spacer, All Balls double bearings, seals, Honda grease for the splines etc.  The rear wheel has a car tire mounted.  If it is in good condition I will leave it mounted as I have wanted to see how a car tire rides and handles.  We have a lot of twisties here and I hope the car tire feels as good or better than the MT on it at present.  I will have the spacer machined to fit the double bearing on the left side and, hopefully, all I have to do is pull the old wheel off, service the splines, driveshaft and differential and install the new wheel with new bearings and be ready to roll again by the same day!  This will be a great Christmas present for the Valk, don't you think?

Sounds like a plan Bernie.  cooldude Should have a wrench party on Friday at that heated garage that Grodon offered. I'd show up to help out and kick tires. I'll bring cold refreshments.

Remember, it is the hat shaped spacer OUTSIDE of the wheel that needs to be shortened, NOT the one that goes inside, between the bearings.  Good luck!

MP,  Right on!  I bought an axle with the spacer on ebay and will use the short outside spacer that comes with it to use with the double row bearing.  Thanks for the info!
Misunderstood,  Friday is looking like THE day to ride.  Sat. and Sun. could have some bad weather.  I'm sure Joe will be planning something.  If he can't, we can always hook up and ride.  Send me your cell # so we can stay in touch in case a ride is planned.

What are you talking about "a nice day for a ride". They are calling for a high of 22 degrees and 4 to 6" of snow. We're not doing any ridin' soon.

Scoot, you need to come South and get in some riding Dude!  If I couldn't ride at least once a week I would be insane right now!

The rear wheel with the car tire came yesterday.  Both look really good.  The tire is a Fusion 205R55/16.  I wish it were a 60 or 65 but it will give me the opportunity to try a CT!  Now I'm waiting on the brarings and spacer to arrive.  Getting close!

Also, when changing the bearings, be sure to put the spacer in before installing the second bearing! Alph and I were switching mine and were about to put the second new bearing in and luckily we realized the spacer hadn't be put back in!

I haven't yet seen where you say your rear bearing is bad....Believe me when I say I ain't tryin to stir no crap but why would you even consider changing a bearing or doing a MOD until you do actually have a bearing go bad? I know some on here have had a few bearing failures and did the mod or just put in new bearings......It happens.....things break......
Boomer the fast black Valk has over 70,000 miles with no failures.....some have double or triple that with no failures.
Here's my MOTO don't fix it if it ain't broke.

Heres four possibilities

1) Preventive maintenence
2) Improvements
3) Staying intouch with your Valk during the cold months
4) Or all of the above

Heres my list this winter

1) Fairing (done)
2) Hard saddle bags (done)
3) Paint fairing and saddle bags the same as the Valk (Still looking far a painter)
4) 36" truck stacks
5) Ragnar Cut on exhaust
6) Car tire
7) LightBar

I've had to replace the left rear bearing on all three of my bikes.Lucky 13 replaced the left rear twice on his former bike.Greg ( Smooth Rider ) had a left rear go out as well these are just my ridin' buds that all live within 5 miles of me...I've never had a right rear go bad and I don't think I've ever even heard of a right going bad....IMO the bearing mod is time and money well spent ( preventive maintenence ) .I've done the double roll bearing on one of mine as the other two need new rear tires and maintence they will get the modification as well.
