My son, Barry, came home from a three month deployment aboard a submarine, and told us that one of the ways the sailors kept up morale was to make wooden cars out of kits and run derby races.  “What do you do for a ramp?” my husband inquired.  “Don’t need one,“  Barry said.  “We just put the cars on the floor and then tilt the sub.”

possible... yes.

Would they actually DO it?  No.

However... we would do "trim parties".

Have the 10 biggest crew members all go to the front of the boat.  It'd start to dive a little... the usually new officer on the "con" would compensate.  The we'd all go aft.  Causing the boat to start to rise.  continue this for 8-10 cycles and pretty soon the boat would be porpoising all over the ocean, and most everyone knew what was going on except the NOOB officer.

You could only do that sort of stuff when you were really NOT on a real mission though.  When it got serious, we got SERIOUS.

That's always what we thought.  EVERY surface ship I ever saw when I was on the boat had crosshairs on it.
