If privacy is your chief concern, head for smaller countries that lack both the arrogance and finances to conduct surveillance their own citizens– places like Chile, Croatia, Uruguay, Sri Lanka, Lithuania, and Costa Rica. A good friend of mine is planning to move to Costa Rica because he is "fed up" with the direction that this country is going in. You'd actually be surprised to find out "who" is tracking you. Last month I discovered that Staples was tracking "all" of my purchases there. Even if I didn't use the rewards card. If you have ever used a credit card along with your rewards card they will continue to track any purchases made with that credit card. After complaining to the presidents office and getting nowhere, I no longer shop at staples.

I don't think it's much of a secret that we are being watched/tracked. Just try to go off-grid. No cell phones, no credit/debit cards, no internet, no GPS, etc... Basically, no technology. Gotta go old school if you don't want to be watched. (Which begs a question - I wonder how many Amish are worried about this issue? ) The Bourne movies and Enemy of the State are good movies that address this issue.

I'm not being watched...
But, I've seen the lists, and believe me, YOU are MOST DEFINITELY being watched! Boy howdy are you being watched...

I've been root on mail servers and general purpose unix machines for over 20 years... though I haven't been on the front lines of system administration in the last few years...
I've analyzed log files for both incoming and outgoing email and log files with process accounting (what command was entered and who entered it) information tons of times with programs that would flag... unusual situations.
All this, and I've never read an individual's email, and I've never paid any attention to what any particular individual was doing, but many times I have identified the place where the hack occurred, and/or the place where the bad thing happened...
Of course I don't know what any government is doing, but statistical analysis of raw data (and there's tons of raw data flying all over the place out there) is a powerful tool that can be used to focus in on what needs to be focused in on.
The important question to me is the human question: who's deciding what needs to be focused on and why?

I don’t know if it’s the government agents or state and local but if I had to guess, it’s not because they don’t have anything else to do. I would imagine that it takes a lot of time and effort to watch someone. Anyway, our country has changed a lot in the last 20 or 30 years. We have many sleeper cells (as they call them) who’s members are citizens of this country and therefore, they need to be watched in order to prevent another attack. So they’re watching me, so what? If I’m not doing anything wrong, let them watch me and they will soon move on.

If I'm being watched, there are going to be some very bored watchers!!! I hear ya! On my last recurring security investigation the investigator hammered at me for 10 minutes trying to "help me remember" anything that I felt someone could use to coerce me into doing something I shouldn't do.

ok, I am one of the "Watchers" on my worksite network: aka "Big Brother" or "The CERT". And I can tell you that there are somethings I would just rather not see........ I do not really care about what turns people on, they just should keep it on their home computer and not do it at work, ya know what I mean? On the flip side, I no longer have to search for those really bizzare websites, my users do it for me.
