The purpose of this post was not to say the 97's were better then the rest, but built a little different because they didn't have all the EPA crap on them at the time, among other things...Motorcycle Cycle Consumer News does a professional test with professional personel doing the testing....they don't ask someone off the street to come in for the test....the factory sends them a bike to be tested...so if I am a factory rep. would I send any bike or would I test a few myself and send the top one???
A lot of companies do not want them to test their products because they risk a poor report, such as Dyna beads......if you line up two identical bikes and race them, one will almost always be alittle faster, when Honda builts these bikes they all have tolerance spec.s to follow, some are on the mark, others are within the spec.'s, some are better balanced then others.....but the main purpose of the post was to say 97's were made a little different and never reproduced to those spec.'s again...with that being said, my 2001 Supervalk will out run my 97, go figure.. Oh my, those aren't legal 97's, they got car tires on them..  LOL.

That silver one looks cool in my book.

I don't know if there is any truth in this or not.   When we were in Maryville at one of the InZ's I talked to a white coat guy inside the factory.

We (about 6 of us) were asking him about the difference in the 97's and the 98's.

His response was the initial engines in the 97's were originally built for the Gold Wing bike.  In other words these were left over engines.   When they were gone, the motor was built a little bit less in the HP & Torque area.  Like I said, I don't know how right or wrong he was.

I know my 97 when Viking suggested how I proceed with mine  on the heads and exhaust, it was dynoed in California at 98 hp, and like 96 torque.

Went back home, took the heads off and did the port and relieve per Vikings engine head guy.  Put their exhaust on it after porting out the exhaust ports, made em round, and rode it back out to Viking.     Dynoed it again, it read 104 hp and 98 (if memory is correct here) torque.  At Paducha, I couldn't even make 98 hp in thqt heat and humidity.

It ran like a scalded dog.  Still does if ya got the guts to twist the crank up....  Never had it on the drag strip, had a chance and didn't, now however I wish I'd of made at least 1 run.....
