Valk Pilot had mentioned a New Years day ride this year and I think that would be great, only let's do it on Sunday the 2nd. I went on the very cold NYD ride last year but I don't remember much of it. I usually put on a Firepit & Cigars New Years Eve party here at Fire Base Allen and, well, quite frankly, I plan on being pretty toasted from Tequila and whatever else is forced on me. So, in order for me to a) enjoy and b) remember, I strongly suggest a Sunday celebratory ride out Fort Worth way (or wherever) and back.

If any of the local Valk Riders want to join the festivities at the aforementioned Firepit & Cigars event, you are most cortially welcome. Just bring a warm jacket and some marshmellows 'cause it's all outside. Give a private side message and I'll shoot you my coordinants.

The 2nd sounds like a great idea.  Might be more things open, too.  Maybe a later than usual start due to morning services?

It's supposed to be 52 degrees.

Need to find a place that serves black eyed peas!

I'm in for the ride!

I'll plan a route. Anyone in the Ft. W general area have a suggestion for a lunch place - specifically one that serves Black Eyed Peas ... whatever they are. Gotta remember I'm a Yankee boy from Arizona.

Planning this ride was going to be my last official act as VP.  It looks like it's become JC's first act as incoming VP. Didn't they teach you about volunteering, Gunny? Evil

Aye aye, ye old Paternal Unit of a Serving United States Marine. Let's plan it together so that you can 'teach me the ropes', oh Master Jedi. Give me call. I still am holding your keys as hostage in a limited attempt to dissuade your move to Allentown.

OK Gents, in recognition/celebration/resignation of Dave Barnett's, aka Valk Pilot, last ride with us as he wildly abandons his VRCC Brethren in search of the frigid winters and claustrophobic freeways of the east,  let’s see him off in a most memorable way by accompanying us on this one last, final ride.
Plan on meeting us in the Celina town square in front of Lucy’s Café on Ohio at High Noon. We will ride west to Pilot Point, north on 377 across the Red River to Oklahoma 32. We'll proceed west on OK 32 to the town of Courtney.
I wanted to do McGehee’s Catfish on the north bank of the Red River, but they’re closed through Jan 5th.
From Courtney we’ll proceed south to Illinois Bend, then south to Decatur via Forestburg and Alvord. From Decatur we'll jut over to Justin, south on 156 past Texas Motor Speedway and onto 114 eastbound.
Our final destination, unless someone has a better idea for a late lunch, is Hard Eight BBQ in Coppell. It’s been mentioned in the Ride Texas magazine.
Hard Eight BBQ is located at 688 Freeport South Parkway in Coppell. Total ride should be just over 200 miles.

The meal is optional considering the midday kickoff and the 4-5 hour hide. May want to eat beforehand, meet at Lucy's (if open) or just pack a lunch. The spontaneity of the ride may just dictate that we stop at any old greasy spoon that looks to carry at least a C- Health Department grade.  police

I just retired my car, but I had no choice - they were starting to hydroplane.....

I would think that new knees is similar to putting new tires on a car - now you can go a lot more miles!!!

That is what you meant, right?

 Okay.

So I've crumble under the persuasive advice from my spouse who is still recovering from her three week cold/flu.

Her directive suggestion will be heeded so I won't have to listen to numerous "I TOLD YOU SO"s.

Well ... tell ya'll what. I'll show up (cause I have heated gear) and wait. Maybe just have a cup of cofee & a cigar and go home. If'n anyone wants to ride, we can take a shorter ride, stay south of the RRiver and ... or not. Depends on consensus of those brave souls who show up.

Sorry I missed you this afternoon, TJ. Here is what the group looked like on the square in Celina...

I did 110 miles today and it was the most enjoyable riding I have had since before Thanksgiving thanks largely to the lack of wind, and electrics. Seriously, I would take a day like today over 100 degree summer heat anytime!

Jeff how come you didn't ride with the valkyrie group up to Decatur? It was a nice day to ride and the "feet heeters" I build from rattlebars page work wonderful. About 260 smiles for me today got back at 1800. It sure was good seeing everybody and shake some  cooldude cold hands. ~TJ

It was a beautiful day for a ride. Yeah, a little cooler than I'd like but I can always put on more clothes.

Nice 219 mile round trip from the house to Celina and then with the group to Catfish O'harlies in Decatur.  Thanks to Yoda Master for a nice route and a good ride.

It was nice to share wind with the group and start the year right.  Also nice to see the new and improved Lemon Drop and the guy with the beemer.

I might have to look into heated gloves, though.  The fingers just thawed enough to type this note!

Happy New Year to the VRCC!

Great to see everyone and a great way to start 2011, even if we were a day late.

RainMaker

Mark~ If you don't have a Gerbing jacket with sleeves, that is the place to start. I learned the hard way myself. I bought the gloves years ago, and yes it helps, but you will find (google) that if you keep your core warm, you will be pumping warm blood to your extremities and your feet and hands will work much better than you might imagine. No more having to tell your feet and hands to move!

Get the double controller while you are shopping. It is not that much more than the single and it will give you the option of controlling another zone - like gloves. The fit of the jacket needs to be snug to get the most efficiency from the electrics. The collar is electrified too, and is so high it goes up into your helmet some unless you have a really long neck, I guess.

I was using my summer gloves today (for best feel of the bike) with Hippo Hands (made specific for your bike, Best Rest sells a variation too) and the grip heat on low, and really love having the feel for the bike without the bulk of even the Gerbing electric gloves which are much better than heavy winter gloves, but a small pain to plug in, imo. I am sure I could have done without the grip heat since my feet were toasty warm all day with winter wool socks. If any area gets too warm the wet from the sweat will make you colder.

Yes, another alternative is to stay off the bike in cold weather! Take mountain passes out of your summer route plans too. Cry

Hth. ~Jeff

Barron nice to meet you again and  cooldude+1 on the pictures. Yes it was a nice day for a ride. For me it was also a IB practice of "How cold can I go and what are the cold spots". Found out that 32 is not a problem without any heated gear!  Evil
