I own a 99 Valkyrie Interstate and I'm wanting to install a set of Progressive 440 Shocks. I'm looking for suggestions on where I can purchase these for the least amount of money. I would appreciate your help.

I was looking last month and when you factor in shipping the best deal I found was at Phat Performance Parts.
I can't say that the same holds true this month, but good luck.

http://www.phatperformanceparts.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=PROG%2D440

BTW, I went with the HD on a Standard plus, and what a difference!

Got my 440s 13in HDs for my I/S from HDL for $476. about 2mths ago. Shipping was free and service was top notch. They will match prices if your find them cheaper than their regular prices.

What model 440's did you get Mr. B?

I have a 1999 IS and bought some 4213's (?) can't remember the exact ones.  They were 12" and
NON HD, there fore they bottomed out on big bumps.  The stock ones didn't do that, so I swapped them
back out.  I would buy some other 440's if I was sure that the spring rates were higher, or at least able
to be adjusted to a higher spring rate than the stock ones.

What do you think?  GodFire chime in ifn you can help a brotha out...

Mine are the ones they sell for the valk they are the 440s  with the heavy rated springs. If you want to stay with the stock height in the rear go with the 12.5 in. Mine are the 13in as I like the bike to sit a little higher in the back than stock. I (we)  ride with the preload set at the 3 setting and that seems to work good for us. It is alittle stiff for just me but I want to have to adjust the settings back and forth. There are 10 settings total.

Here is the deal on Progressive 440s:

For standard and tourer: Standard Rate is the   440-4213 (C for chrome/ B for black)
Heavy Duty is the      440-4221 (C or B)

For Interstate: there is only one shock recommended and it is the same shock called heavy duty for standard and tourer, 440-4221, BUT IT IS NOT IDENTIFIED AS A HEAVY DUTY SHOCK, IT IS CALLED STANDARD RATE FOR INTERSTATE, THERE IS NO HEAVY DUTY SHOCK MADE FOR INTERESTATE.  This is just Progressive's semantics, but it has lead to a lot of confusion.

I had a long talk with a Progressive tech about the SuperValk with no trunk/back seat/sissy/or passenger ever, and SHE recommended that I use the 4213 at my 180-5lbs, which was my feeling as well (even though the SV still has the 7 gal tank and fairing).  She explained that it takes 8 of 10 (available) turns on the 4213s to get the same suspension rate of a 4221 set to the cushiest setting.

I have since installed the 4213s on my supervalk, and they are perfect (for my weight and light load).

I have a standard with windshield and bags.
I went with the 13" HD and set them on 3.
I don’t have any issues with them bottoming out, and I really like the ride.
I'm 6' 200lbs and like the fact that the rear sits higher.
I don't think that it is so much the added 1/2, but the stock shocks were so far gone that when I sat on the bike they compressed a couple of inches.

The info from Jess from VA was very helpful, you might want to look-up his previous post.
Good Luck!

I have 13 inch 440s with standard springs. They are great for me (195) and unacceptable  tickedoff
two up.

I hope to get some heavy duty springs and find a setting  that is good for me and
good for two up.

Yea, I remember.  How ya doin?

I will try the 4221 Progressives.  Like I said, I put the stockers back on becuase they had more spring than the 4213's.

Anyone want a set of 4213's for cheep?

hmmm.... I don't know if the valving and compression rates are the same.  If they were, that would probably be the cheapest option.

I called them. They said I could send them the shocks and they'd change the springs to heavy
duty for $30.00. They said the spring is the only difference between the std shock and the
heavy duty.

I, too, would have thought that the damping would be tuned to the spring, I'm just repeating
what I was told.

I haven't wanted to send my shocks off in the mail, so I haven't done it yet... maybe they'll
just send the spring...? I wonder how hard it is to compress the spring back onto the shock?

If you don't have the tool to compress the spring, send the shocks to them and let them do it.....

Trust me..........

Well, Vermithrax, I just might try and send them in.  I mean, if they are the same and all, what can it hurt?
$30 plus shipping both ways has gotta be better than taking a loss on these and buying new 4221's.

Thanks a bunch guys!!!

Send them in, you'll be glad that you did.
The HD's are great, and everything that I've read says the springs are the only difference.

Hay hauler I looked at mine they are the 440-4221B/C.These are a little taller than stock  as they are 13in from eye to eye. To stay at the stock height the 12.5 in are the ones to use. I tried the 412HDs first and then the 416 air shocks but they were too short and my darkside tire rubbed the inside of the fender where the electrical plug for the rear fender section is. Since we went to the 440s the ride is greatly improved.

Thanks for all the suggestions.  I will call them and arrange to send them in.  They are the 12 inch.  It makes the bike sit a little lower, but I have short legs..  Smiley  I suppose if I decide to go to the DarkSide, I will have to purchase the longer ones.

Sorry for the hijack Thomasj!!
