The stuff below was sent to me in a spam blast. As an IT guy spending a large portion of my companies dough to block spam, I absolutely refuse to send out any of these "send to 10 people messages" for any reason. PERIOD! However, I'm not beyond pouring a little gasoline on a match on a forum.

I have done absolutely no (zero, sip, zilch) research on the claims below. But I like the idea in a knee jerk sort of way.
As even as a good liberal concerned about the environment, (well maybe not so good) I'd be amenable to drilling the gulf and Alaska if I knew the oil wold stay here and be used for and by Americans. I'm still burned that the BP disaster was brought on by a foreign company for the benefit of foreign stock holders. It also galls me that the well they were drilling wasn't even going into production, but was simply going to join the 5,000 or so other caped well dotting the bottom of the gulf. And I still wonder how many of those may start spewing any day. I mean, we've see how reliable and honest these guys are about the safety of their opperations.

Anyway, what about the buy American plan below? Realistic?

WHERE TO BUY AMERICAN GASOLINE

You might want to pass this on....  Take a look at WALMART.  WOW!  They do it right.

WHERE TO BUY AMERICAN GASOLINE.  THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW.  READ ON.

Gas rationing in the 70's worked even though we grumbled about it.  It might even have been good for us!

Are you aware that the Saudis are boycotting American products?  In addition, they are gouging us on oil prices.
Shouldn't we return the favor?
Can't we take control of our own destiny and let these giant oil importers know who REALLY generates their profits, their livings?  How about leaving American Dollars in America and reduce the import/export deficit?
An appealing remedy might be to boycott their GAS.  Every time you fill up your car you can avoid putting more money into the coffers of Saudi Arabia .  Just purchase gas from companies that don't import their oil from the Saudis.
Nothing is more frustrating than the feeling that every time I fill up my tank, I'm sending my money to people who I get the impression want me, my family and my friends dead.  The following gas companies import Middle Eastern oil:

Shell.....................................       205,742,000 barrels
Chevron/Texaco.....................    144,332,000 barrels
Exxon /Mobil........................      130,082,000 barrels
Marathon/Speedway.............     117,740,000 barrels
Amoco.................................         62,231,000 barrels

And CITGO oil is imported from Venezuela who’s Dictator Hugo Chavez hates America and openly avows our economic destruction!  (We pay Chavez's regime nearly $10 Billion per year in oil revenues!)

The U.S. Currently imports 5,517,000 barrels of crude oil per day from OPEC.  If you do the math at $100 per barrel, that's over $550 million PER DAY ($200 BILLION per year!) handed over to OPEC, many of whose members are our confirmed enemies!!!!!  It won't stop here - oil prices could go to $200 a barrel or higher if we keep buying their product.

Here are some large companies that do not import Middle Eastern oil:
Sunoco.........................0 barrels
Conoco...........................0 barrels
Sinclair.........................0 barrels
BP/Phillips....................0 barrels
Hess.............................0 barrels
ARC0..............................0 barrels
Maverick.......................0 barrels
Flying J.........................0 barrels
Valero............................0 barrels
Murphy Oil USA *.............0 barrels
*Sold at Wal-Mart <" href="http://www.walmart.com/%3E" target=_blank rel=nofollow>, gas is from South Arkansas and fully USA owned and produced.
*Not only that but they give scholarships to all children in their town who finish high school and are legal US citizens.

All of this information is available from the U.S. Department of Energy and each company is required to state where they get their oil and how much they are importing.

Hate to burst your bubble, but, that information (e-mail) has been going around the internet since 2005.

Won't work..... oil/gasoline is a traded commodity.....EVERYBODY is in the pool.....
Gasoline is made by refiners.... sold to jobbers that deliver to stations......Here in the Houston area there are many !!!! refineries.  Gas stations that do not have refineries in the area buy their gasoline from local refiners in the area through jobbers on contract.

So what ya buy at any station in your area could be Shell, bp, Exxon -Mobile, or any number of refineries that blend gasoline to spec for different folks in your area.
BTW.... many of the oil companys listed on both lists do not exsist.....what with mergers / buyouts and such.

The oil we should be drilling for NOW, but are not due to gov lack of issuing permits.... is what we would be using 5 years from now..... and it won't be there.  Then you will see gas prices SOAR!!!!!  Kind of mute at this point..... the drill ships are leaving the Gulf for Brazil and Africa.... they won't be back until those plays are done...could be 10 years or more.... they go where they can work.  Girth Up!!!!!!  we will be buying more foreign oil ... not less in the future.
Takes a WHILE and LOTS of money... from drilling to development and getting production to the refineries.
The capping of wells you mention is a misunderstanding on your part. It's an EXPLORATION WELL....  The wells have to be drilled and evaluated to see if there is value in building and placing a 1 Billion dollar ... with a B...production platform on location to produce the oil and gas......That 1 billion price tag is just to have the platform built....That doesn't get it in place ... hooked up to wells ...it does not build and connect pipelines to bring production to the beach, and get the whole thing up and  running.
Hey..... at least gasoline is still cheaper than bottled water.......WTH......turn on the trap... run the water through a filter...MAYBE...  and bottle it up...Talking about gouging the American public!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the input guys. Lots of good info. It's a friggin complex issue and as the snopes article said, the simple feel good solution isn't going to work.
I still can't quite grasp the idea that America is better off letting other countries drill our oil for us. Yes, I know they hire some local workers and actually put a lot of money into the gulf economies, but the lion's share still goes to foreign investors and we (Americans) don't control those companies. And most importantly, those foreign held companies don't worry about decisions that are not in Americas best interest. Tragically, many if not most American held companies put duty to stock holders over their duty to country. I don't believe it was always this way.

Anyway, if I had all the answers, the boss would be calling me "Your Majesty" instead of "hey you."

I’ve said it before.  Put your money in petroleum companies, anyone of 'em, you are guaranteed to make a profit.  There’s a reason why Ray Irani for Occidental Petroleum is being paid a $322,000,000.00 bonus this year!  You figure it out!!
