That's exactly why I'm sooo glad to be on the ground when I'm landing my RC airplanes!

Crosswinds?

My buddy Dan practices take offs and landings all the time, in all acceptable conditions... he told me
about being over at some local gathering of pilots one windy day when one of them who didn't
practice the hard stuff so much showed up and crashed (not a ball of fire or anything) because of
the wind... good pilots (there's probably some on this list) know how to land in a cross wind... it
just looks scary to the rest of us...

I don't think I've ever seen a commercial airplane wheelbarrow before.

Any landing can be scary if you don't practice and keep focused.  And as they say, don't ask me how I know this. uglystupid2  All I'll say is, "it's so simple, what can possibly go wrong?" Shocked

The high-wing 4-engined jet is a BAe-146.  To say it could be problematic would be kind.  We used to refer to it as 5 APUs hauling an electrical fault.

This is my favorite cross wind landing

Some larger military aircraft had the ability to turn the wheels to land as the plane was turned in the direction of the crosswind.  The small planes I flew had to be crabbed into the wind with the wing down on the windward side of the plane.  Made many landings touching the windward wheel down first in the mountains of Virginia and West Virginia.  Practice is critical to becoming an old pilot.

More proof as to why take offs and landings in a helicopter are safer.  Though I will admit, hovering in a strong cross wind or tail wind can be exciting.   Wink
