A friend is one who takes me for what I am.

Cleveland, Tennessee

« on: January 19, 2011, 07:18:16 AM »

I signed the papers on Dec 31st to sell my welding supply business. The business had been struggling hard the last 2 years. Sold to a larger supply company, so it was a win win for all involved...... (employees, customers, etc).

A good friend of mine owns several new car dealerships in this area and offered me a cool part time job.  I am doing what they call dealer transfers, driving a new vehicle from one new dealership to another. I have done 4 so far since the first of the year. So far it's been a blast.  Yesterday I got to drive a brand new chevy pickup to "LA" (lower Alabama 2funny) and bring back a new camaro.
I took some back roads coming home and really "tested out" the camaro. Very powerful car wth great looks. I wouldn't ever own one...but now I can say I drove one for 250 miles!

Before I got stuck on the 40' O2 leash, I did dealer trades for a couple of dealers.

Good way to get to see some of the back roads in places you have never been.

Best ride I ever brought back, was Northern Wisconsin, a 2500 Chev Silverado Diesel pickup.

Don't let nobody blow smoke up your lower dearier, these SOB's will accelerate when stood on real hard.    Make sure ya got a firm hold of it.

Thanks guys...I am counting myself very lucky.  With this part time and buying & selling bikes on the side..... I'm having fun for a change.  I promised my wife I wouldn't do so many rides this year, so the ones I will do will only be the VRCC rides (no Daytona, Panama City or Sturgis bikeweeks)
So with that promised and said...I will be seeing you guys on some rides cooldude

T-bird, that is great news that you can earn money and have fun also.  cooldude I have done the same after I retired, One word of warning; don`t do a long haul with out getting out and walking around for a while. I`m not talking about 2 to 4 hrs in the saddle, but longer than that. In older age your legs need to have a lot of blood going thru them. That does not happen while setting in a car / truck for long trips with out getting some walk time.  Wink
BTW; I made a run with a older guy, as if, that was going to return the unit and he let me know that if I did`nt stop for a break, he would shoot me. Angry I then realized that break time on long hauls were good for your health.  Roll Eyes

RJ,
I got to drive a duramax diesel to Murry KY. and it has been the best drive so far. The most powerful diesel truck I've ever driven, it listed for 56k. I got to drive up through the land between the lakes park on the way there.

Great deal for you, anytime a win win happens is just terrific. Enjoy the new job

Back in 1976 or so I was a student in Buffalo and my friend rented a room from a chevy dealer

Long story short he would pay to fly us to NY (Laguardia) and drive Chevy Blazers back to Buffalo

Maybe I got paid a hundred bucks but I would not exactly take the shortest route with a girlfriend along the way back to Buffalo, just had to be back by close of day at the dealer.

So I got paid to fly, ride and ahem some other things as well

Smokin Joe you would not have enjoyed the flying part  lol but I can hear you sayin you would hit that other stuff

When I was a Pontiac salesman, I would have to do the swap myself once I found the car I was looking for.  Once I sold a new Bonneville wagon (complete with contact paper wood siding) and found it at a dealer on Long Island.  I drove out there in a Grand Am and on the way back with the wagon, she died on the Interboro Pkwy.  Anyone who knows the Interboro just gulped!  She died right under Queens Blvd where the road goes into an uphill 1/4 mile.  I was in the left lane against a divider.  I put the hazards on and lifted up the hood.  Then I had to play frogger to get across the the 2 lanes and then over a divider and across a service lane.  Just as I hit the sidewalk, I heard a loud crash.  Some guy drove right into the back of the wagon.  He had to be doing at least 45 MPH (the road is narrow).  I found a payphone (way before cell phones) and told my boss what happened.  He immediately went to the fax machine, set the time on the fax machine back an hour, and included it on the insurance that covers all of their cars.  He sent the tow truck and put the car inside.  The whole back was smashed in and sitting down on top of the wheels.  He walked around the car with a tire iron and broke all of the windows and did what ever other damage he could so the insurance would total it out.  He then looks at me and says:  "Oh yeah......you OK?"  I said "Yes, but please don't hit me with the tire iron!"

Sounds like a good job T    cooldude Glad to hear it. I used to want my own business 'til I helped my Mom and Step Dad get one up and going and then worked for them a while. They were married to each other and married to that business. No Thanks. I like not having to think about the job 24/7. Good to hear from ya.

Congrats Terry !   I'm sure you're sleeping much sounder these days.  Owning a business can be a real PITA.

Glad to here everything is going good Terry. Hope to cruise with you this year. I'm planing a trip south as soon as my semester ends in May. I got a 2 week break before summer classes start up. So hopefully a few southern rebels will allow a Yankee to join them.  cooldude

Congrats on the sale...

Airgas has taken over every small shop around in these parts.  My local welding supply co. is wanting out, and has tried to get me to buy his shop.   Here, things are still doing fair for him, farmers and ranchers, and several local oil companies.

I just wish I could buy welding rods cheaper... lately, I Have been using a lot of them....100lbs in the past few days...

Thanks Mac,  I feel I've had a big weight lifted off me. I just want something that is a few hours a week and is fun. Besides I have been buying & selling bikes on the side, and need time for that.
Here is one I got this past weekend.

Great to hear you've come out all right. Of course, your first day off you gotta rent 'Vanishing Point'.
