Well today’s the day!!  Packers vs. bears.   When I was growing up in Chicago I didn’t watch much football, other then my brother that played for the Bloomingdale Bears when we moved out to the suburbs.  when my oldest idiot brother got into drugs, mom and pop decided to move out of the big city to a redneck loser town in Wisconsin called cadott.  I never liked living in that god forsaken town, coming from a city of millions, with endless possibilities, then ending up in a village of 1200 paranoid racists that believe all Italians were in the mob thanks to mr. Capone who had his hide out just 50 miles north of there.

When I started watching football, I was a bears fan.  Couldn’t find it in my heart to cheer for the packers, back then bart starr was the quarter back.  After the bears won the ’85 super bowl I thought they were my team!!  I was so proud of being from Chi-town!!  It was a green bay packer that ruined Jim McMahon’s career by throwing him down on a late hit.  I hated the packers for that.  Totally uncalled for, pure hatred.  Brought back all those memories of “go back to were you came from!” and other derogatory comments against my heritage and nationality.

When Bret Favre started playing for the packers.  Didn’t care for him much at the time, still didn’t like the packers at all.  Brett took ‘em to the superbowl, twice, even won one.  Still didn’t care much for the packers……  then I noticed something, I noticed that Brett played with love.  I would watch him hold out a hand and help up the defensive linesman that had been knocked down.  He would smile, all the time!!  Joke around with everyone!!  He loved the game, and he had a happy attitude towards his opponent.  I started watching and rooting for the packers when they played the bears, I also noticed that when they played in Chicago, the fans were ugly to him!!  Even the officials seemed to be against the packers, making bad calls, questionable penalties that favored the bears, and other things.  But Brett kept smiling, somehow pulling miracle wins out of his ass.

I started to like the packers, actually started rooting for the underdog.  I somehow got the feeling of, hey, we’re the redneck losers going against the “big city” professionals.  I started seeing things from the “losers” point of view.  The big show offs from the big city are going to try and show us how to play football!!  Coming in to town with their four wheel drive Cadillac Escalades that never see dirt, and the only time they go off road with ‘em is when they have to park in the grass at their kids soccer games ‘cause there’s not enough parking on the pavement.  Thinking their crap doesn’t stink kind of people from the big city……  I knew then that I was no longer a bears fan, I had become a packers fan.

Sure, I still visit my cousins in Barrington, or Saint Charles once in a while.  My uncle use to live three houses down from Walter Payton.  I still have my Neal (Charles) Anderson autograph pictures, and other great memoriabilia from my old bears days, but I won’t be rooting for ‘em today!!  I’ll be rooting for the packers, all thanks to Brett Favre.

Bear down, Chicago Bears, make every play clear the way to victory;
Bear down, Chicago Bears, put up a fight with a might so fearlessly.
We'll never forget the way you thrilled the nation with your T-formation.
Bear down, Chicago Bears, and let them know why you're wearing the crown.
You're the pride and joy of Illinois, Chicago Bears, bear down.

Alph

I was also born and raised in Chicago, I grew up watching Gayle Sayers, and Dick Butkus. Even though I was transplanted to packerland at the time, my commitment just grew stronger with Walter Payton and the 85 team. (best team in history)  I am proud to admit that I never lost my way and gave up on the Bears like you.

And to think that you actually put that in print for all the world to read just blows my mind!

You shall see the error in your ways this afternoon.

Jim

P.S.                         BLACKDOG you read it right

CHEEZE WIZZ,  Its going to be a GREAT game.

With Grandpa ( Favre) retired now, at least a mid west team will go to the big one.

jim, i don't know, the bears have been know to choke!! Grin    the media may love 'em, the kids and i went to a restaurant the other day and for one full hour, sports center showed highlights of the bears.  as if they've got a snowballs chance in hell on winning.....  this year was a hard year, hopefully Favre will retire (for good) that way i don't have to ever root for the dikequeens again!!

the thing about the packers that blows me away is how they get rid of a good player when their in their prime!!

i'm betting that for the most part the score's going to be a low score, something like 12 to 8, or something goofie like that!!  one thing for sure, the officials will have to be carefull when they throw out those questionalble calls, like this one!!!

I'm a STL Rams fan, Chicago having Mike Martz and Lovie Smith is like watching the greatest show on turf again. Go BEARS

British soldiers wore red coats so that when they were shot, their enemy couldn't see them bleed. I wonder why the Packers wear yellow pants? > GO BEARS <

ALPH,
I admit that living in Wisconsin you have to be somewhat of a packer fan, you just can't help it. BUT, I still favor the Bears when they play the pack,              JUST BECAUSE!

I have to admit that if the packers play like they did last week, it would be hard for any team to beat them, but I don't think they can put a game like that together two weeks in a row. Time will tell.

OK ALPH
The pack deserved to win that one.
But I still do not understand how you can be a packer fan over the bears.

"It was a green bay packer that ruined Jim McMahon’s career by throwing him down on a late hit.  I hated the packers for that. "
Alph, there's no way that play was representative of the Packers, past or present. As a lifelong Packer fan I still shake my head in shame when that play is brought up. I swear he must've been on crack to dump Jimmy Mac like that, but it wasn't a "team play" by any means.
