We went for the 1st time last night. It was kinda fun. It was a flat track. So Dakota won the 1st game and it was 105 - 15, us, when we left during the second match. I think we are gonna start going again. HD & Pabst was a sponsor. HD gave out cheap little pocket knives and PBR was on tap. A win win for me!

I haven't been in a year but I'm sure you've heard of our top rated Wichita jammer "Pooter Smacker". I'd much rather watch the girls skate then watch any football game. Raymond

I had a desk clerk who played for Springfield a couple of years ago. I don't see her in that video, so she may not play with them anymore. Damn she was good looking, but to bad she had the same taste in woman as I have.

When I was stationed in San Fran during the Korean conflict, there were 4 teams who skated 3 times a week.
They hit em hard enough to toss them out of the ring. That was when I decided it was fake just like the Pro Wrestlers.
They would also skate into the center and try to tangle A'holes with anyoe close by.

Never been...but used to watch it with my Granpa when I was a kid. In California, the Bay Area Bombers always went up against the L.A. T-Birds...good stuff when you were 12!

My wife and I are waiting for the home to team to crank up again this season. We enjoy it. Here in Charlotte is also flat track with hard hits. Our team is fairly new so they're still trying to earn respect on the national level. This is just about the only sport that my wife and I enjoy. FYI: This sport is also coming to the Wii soon if you want to get into the action in your own home.

I can't speak to the 70s derby, but I can say that the modern derby that I follow is not sports entertainment it is an entertaining sport. The outcomes are not predecided. The hits are real. The goal of winning is real. I've seen the joy they experience after a good bout, especially winning. I've seen the disappointment when they lose. The names are fake, but the sport is real.
If this sport is fake then they haven't told the players.

Used to watch Roller Derby all the time with my Dad as a kid. Channel 41 on UHF, using the little round antenna on the back of the TV and watching it through the snowy picture. They played on a banked track with a 4 foot high guard rail around the track that was always good for flipping over and getting checked into.
Not a fan of the flat track at all. Seems like it is missing one of the best elements of the game.

I was hoping someone else would remember that Jim Croce song!!
Jim Croce's songs about PEOPLE are classic... Roller Derby Queen, Rapid Roy the Stock Car Boy, etc... They didn't (and don't) get enough air time!
Thanks for posting that video!

So sorry about your flat situation up north. The "flat track" girls down here are far from flat and well worth the watching. The two biggest elements seem fine around here.. how's about your's Fudgie? RJ the old professional TV Roller Derby was indeed mostly for show (fake) but these girls skating in the city leagues now are for real. Raymond

I feel sorry for those of ya'll that don't get to sit in an arena and cannot get a full view of the action. This is old footage from the team when it was young. Can't find the newer, more aggressive, sold out arena videos in a quick search. Leon Russell and Jim Croce remind me that we need more good roller derby songs.
