I purchased a Valkyrie (tourer) that has the piggies ripped out.  Looking for poor mans fix.  Will this work?  1.) Remove tip, 2.) Insert quite baffle & secure at end of muffler, 3.) Install tip.  Option number 2: use round 4" auto muffler in place of baffle.  I love the bike, but it is to LOUD!  I previously rode VTX1800C with cobra pipes w/thunder monster baffles, and last bike Yamaha Venture (stock exhaust).  Wife rides VTX1300R w/cobra slip-ons.  The Valkyrie has a very loud drone sound (300 lb. hornet).  Any input or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Were the piggies cut off or are there holes in the rear of the cans?  If there are look in the cans with a flashlight.  If you can't see any baffles, you have what is known as the Ragnar Cut.  There are only a couple of remedies for the Ragnar Cut.  The first one is replacing the exhaust system with a stock one or an aftermarket one like Cobras.  The second is performing one of the glasspack mods.  That's what I did.  My '97 Tourer had the Ragnar Cut when I bought it and I couldn't deal with it,  The extremely loud drone drove me crazy.  There's an entire section on exhaust mods in Shop Talk.

If it's that loud I'd say there's been more done than just the piggies!!
When I cut the piggies off My Valk there was very little difference.

Marty, I had read all of the shop talk mods.  That is where I got the idea to try this. Got any input?

I think it is worth a shot.  Several people have this problem.  I am not a brain surgeon, so I do not know how this might affect back pressure, jetting, etc., etc.  TALK TO ME....!

I have a 99 I/S and the piggies were cut and the baffles drilled when I got her, I did not mind the sound until I got on the Highway for long trip and the drone bugged the crap of me, I took the tips off and welded six, "4 long "3/4 diameter pipes onto the bafflers. basically replaced the piggies, baffles are still drilled and the sound is great, no more drone on the highway. This was done on the bike, but I did disconnect the battery cables before I mig welded them on.

Look at the Q-Express glasspac mod in Shop Talk. You can use a quieter glasspac and silencers, if you can find a rached stock set of pipes cheap. Check Pinwal and cut the rear baffles out of a wrecked set and put them in yours.
Just a suggestion.

There is no repairing pipes that have the Ragnar Cut.  Just replace or modify them to use glasspacks.  I did the ones Que Express wrote up and I used 18" packs.  If you're not up to it, talk with MarkT or Ernie Schuester.

Save yourself alot of trouble and get another set of pipes if you don't like the sound of yours.  Lot's of oem's out there in good condition for decent prices.  Here is an example:

My Standard had the piggies cut, baffles intact. The droning on the highway was pretty awful, the rest of the time I loved how she sounded. I just wore ear plugs on long rides until I bought my IS.

Rango -  IF your noise issue is truly a resonation and not just loudness, try this.  Get a couple of those magnetic business cards that are stuck all over your phone book and put one on the outside of your stock TIPs, between the tip and the rear wheel on a Std/Tourer or the underside of the tip on an I/S.  They should dampen the vibration/resonance.  I have used them successfully in other situations where a resonance was irritating.  (dishwasher tub for one)  If they work, you could clean the inside of the tip really well and put them inside.  Even if you lose one once in awhile, they are cheap.  Worth a try.  Stan

Aren't they some kind of magnetic material encased in flexible plastic? Don't the tips get too hot for the plastic?

That last comment sure made me wonder: If a magnetic field will change the the sound, why not just try a couple of regular magnets??

Earl, it's not a magnetic field thing.  The added weight will change the way the exhaust resonates and may reduce drone.

Check and see if they have baffles. If they have baffles and are still too loud, get different (stock) pipes.

If they have baffles...
Wrap them with stainless steel scouring pads (2 per baffle).
If you need them another level quieter... take the baffle to your auto store and buy freeze plugs with will fit over the end of the baffle. Drill a 3/4" hole (same size as orignal piggie).
It has worked great. It still sounds great but just not as loud. cooldude
