Having been a VRCC member for only a few months, it has been interesting to see the topics transition from Valkyries (during riding season) to more political and religious as the snow flies. I thoroughly enjoy the variety of post, and although I rarely participate, it's high time I dip my toe in the water!
As a conservative, I am deeply troubled over what appears to be lack of a worthy candidate/opponent for the next presidential election. Albeit a little early to formally announce a candidacy, the only Republican making waves has been Sarah Palin. Between her, Limbaugh, Beck and Hannity, their rants are cramping my pride in being a conservative, yet they seems to be the voice of the Republican Party. I believe all four are on a path of self-destruction.
There is no questioning the energy and charisma that Sarah Palin brings to the table, but I do question her motive. There is also no questioning that Sarah Palin is "easy on the eyes", which never hurts any candidate, male or female alike. I have always contended that if Sarah Palin looked like Madelein Albright, she would be a "non issue/threat"!
Here is the yard stick I use in looking at presidential candidates:
* Must have good command of the King's English
* Must be at least as intelligent as myself (not a stretch)
* Previous government experience (preferably at a state level), and/or CEO of a major corporation
* Knowledge of international affairs and politics, with some geographical savy
* Did I mention good command of the King's English
These are the basic requirements, obviously the list could go on and on. What other names or traits come to your mind when you think of worthy candidates?

so you wouldn't have a problem challenging Palin to a game of jeopardy? I've heard a few that sound like a solid conservative choice. Herman Cain, John Huntsman.

There's going to be a really cool game of Jeopardy next week: http://washingtontechnology.com/articles/2011/02/10/ibm-watson-data-uses.aspx...To achieve that speed, Watson runs thousands of processes at once, using hundreds algorithms and Natural Language Processing and Statistical Machine Learning technologies. It also relies on Unstructured Information Management Architecture.
There was an episode of NOVA about Watson this week... the concept of Machine Learning was described... it is really powerful... -Mike

Sara Palin is definitely easy on the eyes, so much so I believe it actually hurts her chances of holding a national office, Sara is very articulate, Sara is very intelligent, Sara has name recognition, BUT, in my mind Sara ruined her chances at a presidential office when she QUIT the governors office. That was a BIG mistake. The Tea Party is the reason she is still in the spotlight today, but that will not get her elected, that is more of a movement or a cause than a political party.
As far as other conservative hopefuls, the pickings are slim. Jim

A lack of true "statesman" type candidates has been a real problem for both parties for quite some time.

I like her quite a bit!! But she has become a a pariah to the left, and needs to step aside from running, even as a VP. She should continue her good work, and is a great spokesperson for my Tea Party and conservative values.
We must have someone (anyone) who can beat Zero, and it isn't her.

A candidate will emerge and he is already picked just not on the stage.
Trump will not trump him.
Huckaby will not be him.
Anyone with no bad past will beat the community organizer.
TeA party will be behind him and repubs will adore him.
Just wait and see.
Obama will be humiliated and quit early after the election.
Just wait time will tell.

I like Huckabee too, you'll hear from the left he has baggage. when he was govenor of Arkansas he commuted the sentence of the murderer that shot 4 police officers in the seattle area. you will hear that he 'pardoned' this man, he did not. the criminal was in prison for a burgulary and a strong arm robbery he didn't use a gun either time. the judge took the wood to him and sentenced him to 108 years. the huck reviewed his case and commuted his sentence and allowed him to be elgibile for parole. the parole board released him, and I'm sure if they knew he would end up taking the lives of 4 police officers everyone involved would have left him in prison to rot.

Love her conservative views, love her "pluckiness", love her non-lawyerish ways, & really like her looks. She's a cutie no doubt. She does have a grating voice that I find annoying. However..... I think she has no chance of being elected against the tingly feeling giver BHO and his liberal propaganda machine we call the American media. Therefore I won't vote for her in the primary. In a perfect world she could be a great money raiser, hell raiser, and liberal aggravator that doesn't run for office but helps the cause in her own way. If so she could help an electable ticket say.... Herman Cain/ Marco Rubio in 2012. Now THAT ticket would put the libs in quite a quandry!

What I want from government is to be given the most possible personal responsibility, the most possible freedom and the least possible restrictions.
I don't care much about the conservative label. As I've said before, when I was a kid liberals mostly stood for the freedom to do whatever you wanted as long as it didn't interfere with anothers right to do the same. Conservatives seemed to mostly want everyone to have the same haircuts and act the same as everyone else. Now their positions have mostly reversed. Conservatives mostly stand for the individual freedom our forefathers envisioned and liberals are very similar to some weird fundamentalist, safety nazi sect where everyone needs to "goose step" to the same politically correct drummer. In another 20 years they will have probably reversed positions again.
Thirty years ago I would have been labeled a liberal, now I'm probably labeled a conservative but my views have never changed, just the label.
Ron Paul has always stood for freedom and I'd rather see him elected than anyone who's ran since Reagan. But he's not the "media personality type" and is probably unelectable in the trendy, shallow world we live in today.
