I getting ready to replace the bearings and dust seal on my rear wheel.  The Honda service manual mentions that the 6 socket bolts holding the Brake Disc need to be replaced along with the 5 bolts holding the Damper Plate.  Are new bolts REALLY needed?

Thanks

I've taken the rotors off on both wheels many times and always reused the original bolts.

You should give some thought about doing the left side mod and go with the double roll bearing. Not much to it other than getting the spacer machined.Ive even heard some folks just wack it off with a hack saw  Undecided  I got mine machined for $10.00.

To convert the rear left side single row bearing to a double row bearing like the rear right side has it looks like you'll need:

item 3 is the spacer that needs to be machined narrower
item 17 is the double row bearing itself. May have to change the right side as well if it's shows signs of wear

Unless you are experiencing some problem with the rear wheel bearings, it would be the best option to leave them alone.

Bearings are not a preventive maintenance item that needs replacing!

Staying with the identical set-up is the least problematic way to go!

Using a poorly conceived idea along with bad mechanical practice is not an upgrade but rather a recipe for disaster.

My Interstate has the oem rear wheel bearing setup. I've had it less than a year and it only has 9,000 miles on the bike. I have heard of a few rear wheel bearing failures and many suggestions from forum members to change the left side rear wheel bearing from a single row to a double row bearing. Is there a problem in doing that?

Thank You,

My standard has 72,000 miles on the original bearings, front and rear. When I have a problem I will fix them. Until then I am riding....

Sounds to me that you think this modification will indemnify you.

Not at all. Not sure how you could have come to that conclusion. With the low miles on my bike, I have no plans to do anything with my wheel bearings. I posted that I've have heard and read of forum members doing the single row to the double row bearing modification. I just don't know why others think it's a bad idea.

All the best,
