GGRrrrrrrrr... what a modification nightmare. The main problem is that the Hitch and spacers literally moves everything out 3/4", on each side of the bike (totally 1-1/2"). This pushes a lot of brackets out of wack. (misc. nuts, bolts, spacers REQUIRED). I seriously dread the day a flat tire occurs and the rear tire has to come off. (I'm not sure if the wheel/tire can be removed with Hitch still in place?). Just letting off steam. Thanks

If it is a true Hitchdoc and you are dropping the wheel off out the bottom, on a bike jack, no problem.
Now, if you take the bottom 1/2 of the rear fender off and using like a center stand to raise the bike, then yupper, you will be in deep sheet trying to get the wheel off.
If you don't raise the bike high enough to take the wheel out the bottom, you are wasting your time putting the hitch on. Yes, they are a pain in the arse to install trying to figure out what spacer you need and where.

This thread http://www.valkyrieforum.com/bbs/index.php/topic,21186.0.html offers some good advice. In short, the center crossbar of the bag guards can be cut and a spacer fashioned from aluminum (or such) avoiding placing undue tension on the bag guards while keeping everything square.

Here's how I fit mine. I don't use the lower brace anymore. The bags have been loaded heavy with no problems in 6 years. I used allthread rods and nuts to install. The bags come off with 3 nuts to service the rear wheel.

In his post, where did you read that he had a rail problem, I read it as a Hitchdoc hitch problem, they come in one piece unles it is a receiver type.

I read it the same way, by the title: HitchDoc with Saddlebag Rails (98 Tourer)..&%@$!!*&@!! That would lead me to believe he had rail problems...as well as him mentioning that "The main problem is that the Hitch and spacers literally moves everything out 3/4", on each side of the bike (totally 1-1/2"). This pushes a lot of brackets out of wack. (misc. nuts, bolts, spacers REQUIRED). " This also leads me to believe that it's a problem with the extra 1 1/2" that the saddlebag mounts at the rear experience. Now, if he had said "the main problem is the hitch...", I would have been led to believe that, instead... My bad... R

Fudgie - are you asking about the rails around the bags? I'm working on spacers right now, to remedy that. They're going to be about like the crossmember that I did, hopefully will fit between the crossmember and each of the side rails. Just been working on the wiring mods, lights, and windshield/baker air wings/lowers instead. But, the rails are the very next project! Gotta get-er done, before this weather gets TOO nice NOT to get the ol' gal out. Haven't forgotten you - I'll be making an extra set or two, when I figure it all out, for the after-market sets, because that's what I have. R

I'm back... this issue is mostly with the chrome rails. I have overcome most of the mounting issues, but when I put the saddlebags in, they rub (as I expected). the crux of the matter is the chrome rear section (that follows the contour of the fender), as you insert the left and/or right saddlebag guard, this "point" (male slides into female) is being tweaked as you pull the rack 1" (or more) from up front by the shock absorber mount and the lower mount by the passenger peg. I think a qty 2) 1/2" to spacers (chrome) would alleviate this stress point, it would give spaceing for the bags and it would alleviate the need to space (as much) up front at the shock absorber and peg.
