Need your help again......2000 std. valk - no optional electrical accessories
Yesterday my tach quit working.  ALL lighting, brake, directional, idiot lights, etc. etc. are functional.
Looking at the tach as a clock face.....the needle normally rests on the pin at the 5 o'clock position.  The needle with the key off rests at the 7 o'clock (below the pin) position.  Turn the key on and the needle moves to the 5 o'clock position BUT it is resting on the wrong side of the pin i.e., push against the pin - not resting on it.

Again, all lighting is functional as is the bike.

I'd appreciate anyone's assistance or input on this

thanx,
bill

I have a 2000 Tourer, and I had the same thing happen to me.
Honda replaced the tach under warranty.  I have no idea how the needle got to the other side of the post...  I need to go take a look at the tach to refresh my memory, but sounds like the same thing I experienced - probably 6 or 7 years ago...
Good luck!

Odd, my tach needle normally rests in the 7 o'clock position above the pin with the key on or off-if the engine is not running, as do all the other Valks I have seen. The needle resting at the 5 o'clock position would indicate an abnormal situation to begin with as that is not where the needle rests.
How the needle got between the pins has to be the question of the day.
Like F6mark said, "good luck".
I do think you'll get your answer as more read this post.
Not familiar with the sending unit for the tach-I'd give thought to the sending unit or grab a replacement tach.

Somewhere a magnet got in the way, like a tank bag with 3-4 magnets holding it down, like mine. John Schmidt diagnosed the problem for me and it took some patience to do, but try a strong magnet to push the needle back around the tach face in a counter clockwise motion. If a magnet will move the needle, just monkey with it. It took me about 6-7 attempts to get it right. Let us know if that has any effect. Good luck.

Need to learn my 'clock' face.  I mis-stated the positions. Normally, at rest, the needle rests on the peg is about the 8 o'clock position.
Power off - the needle is sitting a little past 6 o'clock.
Key on - the needle sweeps up and touches the bottom of the peg.

I'll try the "magnet" idea.

Thanx,

Yeah, if you toss your tank bag on the handlebars during fueling the magnet will do this.

A decently strong magnet will let you move it back around.

'thewoodman'
Just tried the magnet idea - took all of 60 seconds - it worked..........
Wouldn't have thought of that in a million years.......

Thank you very much,

I'll be cursed- I wonder if the Honda shop used a magnet or replaced my tach?   I really just assumed I got a new tach...

Actually, it was Daniel Meyer that diagnosed the problem for me a few months ago. I would have NEVER thought that throwing my tank bag over the handle bars when re-fueling would have such an effect. And I thanks Daniel Meyers for passing his knowledge on and I just did hte same. That's why this board works so well.
