The speaker in the video seems to indicate that the reason for this air rifle on the Lewis and Clark expedition was to intimidate the native tribes.  Most other writings show that it was brought as a novelty to impress the tribes.

Pretty cool video.  I knew about them having that on the expedition, but I forgot about it until this thread.  Also, I have never heard a description of it as good as this.  Thanks for posting.
