Greetings,

Is anyone familiar with the Huerco Tanks Park?  I heard it is a popular area for rock climbing, however with all the trouble in the boarder areas I was wondering if this is a safe place to visit.

Thanks in advance for any advise.

Guessing that is the Hueco Tanks State Park outside of El Paso?  If so, it is an interesting place to visit.  Rock paintings and good hiking/climbing. Not much else out that way.

Two good things about safety.
- It is N of El Paso rather than S.
- You can make it safer by how you pack.

If I remember right, this is one place where you have to have a reservation, so you might check that.

Have fun.

Thanks for the replies.  My Daughter and friends are headed that way, and I had to find out more about this place.

Hueco Tanks is a small state part east of Fort Bliss and El Paso along Montana Blvd. which eventually becomes US 180.  US 180 heads almost due east from El Paso about 60 to 80 miles until it archs through Guadalupe pass toward Carlsbad in a couple of spectacular and somewhat windy curves.  I would pint out that once you get outside El Paso... there is only one gas station along US 180 between there and White's City, NM.  That would the the little store at the corner of the Dell City turn off... that station is not always open... so be careful with fuel.

I last visited Hueco Tanks was in 1991, so it's been a while.  Even in those days, the rock climbing is the big draw... although if you like desert the hiking is good too.  There was very nice covered campsites at the base of the main geologic baccolith and the campground had nice bathrooms and showers.

does that help?

It's been years, but the last time I was at Hueco Tanks I was working for the Miss World America Contest.  We spent a week photograhing the contestants throughout the area - even Juarez.
We had a Park Ranger take us to some really cool places in the park that had hieroglyphs and ancient pottery shards.  These where off limits to daily park visiters back then.

The Tanks are an amazing natural phenomenon that basically allowed the indigenous folks to live quite well in a very harsh, arid climate.  It's well worth the trip.

I think that's the park we partied at when I was stationed at Fort Bliss in the mid 80's. Don't know how it is today, but it was a nice place back then.
