this is non valk related but we have such knowledgeable folks here I need to give it a shot. I'm getting a audible "chirp" coming from the area of the smoke detector. it chirps about every 40 seconds. The kind of chirp that some electronics have built in to let you know the battery is low. I"ve taken down all detectors (they are only 2 months old), unwired the connections from the romex to the pigtail and still hear the chirp. just a few minutes ago I turned off all breakers....still chirped.........then i cut the main off......still chirped. I'm at my wits end and have no idea what to check next. any ideas??????????

I probably don't understand what you're saying, but...
(all?) hardwired detectors have battery backups...
Mine are all battery only...

Are you able to physically remove the smoke detector(s)? Are ALL of them chirping, or just one or a few?
(Not an electrician, but tracked down enough "OH MY GAWD SHUT UP I CAN'T SLEEP!!!!!" issues with smoke (And Carbon Monoxide!) detectors to feel like one sometimes...)

all batteries are removed, all detectors are disconnected and laying in my work room. cut the power to the entire house and still have the chirp. the chirp is coming from the second floor. i've even gone up into the attic to see if i can find anything up there.........no luck. i'm at a complete loss. the chirp did quit for about 4 days but started up again this morning. i'd pull my hair out if i had any.

Carbon monoxide detector near any gas appliances? (Heater, water heater, etc) possibly? You made any geeks mad lately? http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/electronic/8c52/(Semi serious on that suggestion... )

Ooops, I understood ya to say you had pulled the chirper down.
Now it sounds like you haven't located it yet.
Keep lookin as it could be a carbon dioxide one going off.
Mine does that every so often, but all I have to do it is unplug it, let it rest about 5 minutes and it is good to go for another 2 years.

they chirp for two reasons, one, the battery is low, two there isn't any AC power. when you tell me that you took it down, now, it's saying "HEY! WERE'S THE AC!!". it's a trouble signal, my father in law had the same problem turned out to be a bad wire terminal on the back. also, it might be dirty. some (i do mean some) smoke detectors are able to be washed under running water, of course, they shouldn't be plugged in and the battery should be taken out, make sure that it is washable. hard to diagnose without being there.....

Alph, I might be misunderstanding, but I don't believe he's narrowed it down to a specific smoke detector, but the sound sounds like one...
Or am I not understanding the situation correctly?

Is there a Logitech remote on that floor? I had a remote that had a bad nubmerpad that was replaced. I left the bad one on the AV rack.
Took me weeks to finally track down the intermittent beep of the low battery. I checked every smoke detector and every other remote but forgot about the broken guy until it beeped when I was loading a Blu-ray.
Might be some other battery powered device-remote, key fob, or clock radio.

bg,
Just went thru this about a month ago...you have one that is bad...so if you have re-attached them. listen to the one that is cherping and replace jt. You can not get these at the big box stores. The sensors go bad over time and need replacing, the cherp is it letting you know.
Best of luck.

wireless device???? i do have photo sensor lights that come on at dusk and go off at dawn on my garage. i've been in this house for 14 years and this is the first time i've had this problem. only new electrical device that uses batteries i've bought lately is a laptop. however the problem started before i purchased it. again, all detectors are down, batteries removed, bare wires hanging (taped and capped) where the detectors used to be and still chirping. even killed all power to the house and still had the stupid beep. it is so typical of a low battery chirp, but being in this house as long as i have it unthinkable of a battery just now running low. 14 years is a long long time for a battery of any kind.

I believe it is a carbon monoxide detector with battery backup with low battery.

to all who replied.......thank you. got the sucker taken care of. turns out it was the old smoke detector my wife had stuffed on the bottom shelf, way in the back of the linen closet just to "get it out of the way". the sound was coming from the bottom shelf, up the closet walls and out the electrical outlet where i was installing the new detector. what a relief. thanks again.

Big Rig DH is correct. These units have a shelf life, mine were about 10 years, until the sensors took a crap. New batteries will not remedy the problem, but give it a try. All styles are easily found at the big box stores. These units do have some stored energy.......if they continue to chirp after removing both the ac and dc source, depress the test button and it will chirp and then peter out.
