I replaced my original OEM petcock for no other reason that I had my 99 Valk apart in 04 to go to Inzane. Never had a problem with them and I NEVER turn them off. Maybe I have been lucky? I have sen where guys have had luck with the Pingle valve. Anyone got a pic of what it looks like on the bike? I'll admit that I do care what it may look like . . . .

non-vac valve in the "OFF" position at 11 o'clock. Reserve is at 9 o'clock. "ON" is at 7 o'clock. Ymmv,

mase....it's works like a charm. before i put mine on i was a little worried about whether it would be difficult to turn while riding, but as it turned out.....NO PROBLEM. i put a pingle on both of my bikes, quite frankly because i started having problem after problem with the stock valve. i put a non-vacuum model on each of mine, and the only thing i had to do was reprogram my brain to cut the valve on and off like we used to have to do with all our older bikes.

Depends on the size of your meat hooks. I did it on the fly one time (w/summer gloves) just to see if I could. It can be done, if your hand knows what its looking for. Index finger operation. Safety first!

Never going to happen with me. The scare tactics don't work. I maintain my bike, I have an extra oem petcock on hand. It's all good . I am going to keep the bling.

If you cut the diaphram out, remove the spring, plunger and cap the vacuum hose, your OEM petcock should work by turning it on and off as needed. But you get to retain the stock looks, which I like.
I'm sure Pingle's are fine but I don't see the need to spend the money for one. Modifying your OEM petcock to work as a manual one if free.

Chillerman. I have a the Honda chrome engine thingies around the petcock and ignition. That is the look I am concerned about screwing up. Yours looks good, where did you get the chrome you have? http://www.carolinabikeandtrike.com/Never done me wrong .

Mase,
Yes, you should turn the fuel on and off when you make the oem petcock manual instead of vacuum operated.

If you want to retain that look, go with the electric Pingel and mount your old switch, on a plate to make it look real. We did that on a Yama-hopper Venture of my old riding buddy (RIP Frank) when his valve decided to take a poop. We mounted his old valve on a small piece of metal and mounted it where it was before, only now it didn't do anything except fill the hole. Looked good also.

That's all well and good RJ, but how do you go to reserve? Or is that option cut out?

All you guys have gotten me nervous about leaving home with a stock petcock. I tend to go off on solo ventures everywhere, so i'm carring a petcock rebuild kit and a vac hose hoping I don't have a trip become a nightmare. Seems like my bags are getting more and more loaded with contingency plans. My paranoia tells me next I should carry wheel bearings and timing belts. Jeeze, on my trailer i'm towing, I guess I could drag another Valk "just in case".

You could go one step farther. Turn the OEM petcock into a cigarette lighter, or a switch for extra hi-way lights. Fred.

I guess I'm triple stupid! Already had a stock petcock go bad AND cause a no damage hydro-lock. So what did I do??? Put on another new OEM petcock. Even dumber move?? Rebuilt the failed '97 petcock & put it on Kim's '98 when hers went bad, symptom: no reserve & no shut off, but no hydrolock. When I bought the '99 it had no reserve & no shut off also so it got a new one too. So far so good with all three Valks & their OE petcocks. All Valks were over 10 years old & my '97 had almost 80k on the clock when the petcocks failed. I think that is a decent record for a part with rubber as a critical component. Modify your Valk in the way that makes you feel the best. Nothing ruins a ride like worry. Riding motorcycles is supposed to be a relaxing thing, not another of life's problems!

Anybody? I know of the hydrolock thing but is there any other reason? I got in the habit of turning mine to off when killing the bike (which is what you'd do with a manual one) but is there other problems? Like will it just blow-up on the road or something??

No ! Had to replace it when I forgot to disconect the selecter when pulling tank and broke it That was 70 K ago ! Never shut it off.I have dealt with a hyro-lock on one of Lyn-Dels Valks. I knew what it was when I hit the starter. Then pulled plugs and carbs. No other problems, with more Valks then I will admit too ! These are just my two

Tx Bohemian Most Valk riders will change them because the diaphragms often times fail. This can cause the gas to continue to drain; if this happens it will drain into the cylinders and cause the dreaded Hydro Lock. Turning the petcock off may be the best way to prevent this. If the diaphragm fails I am not certain that turning the petcock off would prevent this. Hope this answers your question.

Most Valk riders will change them because the diaphragms often times fail. I would observe that use of the terms, "most" and "oftentimes", while well intentioned are overstating to the point of being greatly incorrect.

However on another post "fuel shutoff" a biker was talking about adding an extra shutoff valve and one member (Bobbo) stated "If the stock diaphragm develops a vacuum leak, it will shut off the gas flow no matter what you add to it." So now I'm a bit confused, are we talking about two different pieces of equipment on these bikes? or two different conditions? (say a vacuum hose coming off compared to a diaphragm leaking) My head hurts now!!

Yeah no kidding....I have a simple question that hasn't seemed to be answered. If you turn the petcock to "off" whenever you are not riding the bike...can gas continue to flow if the OEM petcock is going bad? Or, does it just happen to those that leave the fuel "on"?

IF... the petcock is going bad, gas CAN flow in the off position. IF... a float needle doesn't seat for some reason, you CAN get fuel in the cylinder. Then, with all these IFs , you CAN get hydrolock. This seems to me to be a rare problem but expensive when it happens. After reading several opinions from people here that I respect, I have a pingle in the parts box to be installed. Your bike, your peace of mind. To each their own. I don't carry spare parts on the bike. I have a tire plug kit and a 12v compressor in the left bag. After that, a cell phone and a credit card.

For fuel to flow with the petcock in the off postion it needs 2 faults. 1 the diapraphagm is not sealing and 2 the selector shaft has side load and is holding the manual valve off its seat. I pulled my tank last week and inspected the petcock to clarify some thoughts on the failures. After a though examination I can say there is a lot of not quite correct "information" circulating about these. Took some photo's of the petcock and a spare cover set I have. May one day do up an article on the petcock. Cheers Steve
