16 months ago I ruptured my plantar fascia in my right foot.  I swore off sports since then.

I have been in the gym hard, and getting in a lot better cardio shape.  I started playing B-Ball and Racquetball again without incident.

Until this morning.  I met my buddy, co-worker, and riding partner this AM at 5:00 to play racquetball.  5 minutes into it, something in my calf POPPED and I am hobbled.  I stopped immediately, and have been nursing it.  It hurts though.  It's better now than when I did it 2.5 hours ago.  But crap on a cracker!

Getting old is bullsnot.

Jabba I see you (like me) have to learn the hard way.  I was always told how important it is to STRETCH before exercising.......Id do a cusery lean or push against the wall and "Im good"

Now being an older fart I KNOW  dont stretch seriously and something gonna be "pulled" and the calf was the first to go on me too.....PAIN.....Im there with ya buddy but after it heals stretch good and you may not ever repeat the pleasure

I stretch alot.  as a former athlete I know how important it is.  Plus, I have been seeing David Craig for my foot and hip issues.  He was the trainer for the Indiana Pacers for 30 years.  He's a believer that most issues in backs and feet are rooted in the hips.  Especially plantar facsiitis. I broke my back in the Navy, and it causes hip instability in me.

I know I am a lot less flexible than I used to be.  I have been working on it though.  10-15 minutes 3 times a day, plus some special stretches he gave me for my hips that require stairs.

Plus.. I stretch in between volleys on the court about every 5 minutes or so.

Maybe I didn't work hard enough at it this AM.  I usually do though.  42 years old and 325 lbs ain't helping either.

I snapped my left Achilles forty years ago in my early 30's, and I was in shape at the time....happened while I was playing basketball also. It's like the weakest link in a chain, it will be the first to break and that happened to be my achilles. Pulling or straining a muscle is one thing, snapping the tendon completely apart.....now you're talking some pain. Instant throbbing, gut wrenching, puking your guts out from the pain. And to top it off, I had to get a local kid to drive me home and he had never driven a stick before. We went to the ER, the dr. did some checking and ran his fingers down the back of my ankle and pressed in one place, saying "aahhh there it is and....." I never heard the rest of the sentence. When he did that I went bye-bye. I've pulled and heavily damaged muscles and tendons in the past, but actually snapping the tendon is a whole different story. It had to be corrected surgically and I carried a cast around all summer from the knee down.

I hear you brother!  All us former athletes are paying the consequences from our past lives.  Just had my knee replaced last week that was originally blown out playing high school football.  3 surgeries and 36 years later here I sit in rehab once again...hopefully, for the last time.

Soon it will be "catch me if you can" and I'll be shooting hoops with my son without pain!

After flipping [blowover] a hydroplane at over 100 mph 16-17 years ago, I hyper-extended every muscle and joint in my body, though nothing was broken when I woke up. I still have issues from it. That's the price we pay for surviving the crap we put our bodies through. Remember when we all thought how bullet-proof we were?

There's an old Little Feat song with the line: 'And you know that you're over the hill ,when your mind make a promise that your body can't fill'

The older I get the more often I hear that little jingle going off in my head after doing a big weekend building project and then going back to work on Mondays.

You are going to have to do a sheet load of exercise to get that knee back in shape.   Do not trust it however, as it will drop ya in certain situations.    Mine has put me on my face about 3 times in the past 3 years.   Most of these were in 2010.  Had one fall in 2009, and 1 in 2011.     This is the results of that one.   Arm went down a wall and head hit the door jam.   Saw a bunch of stars, pretty ones also.   It just fileted the skin off.   It has almost healed up now.

At 63 years old, I seek exercise that is easy on the joints.  Bicycle riding is my cardio and lifting light weights and doing a lot of reps helps with muscle strength.  The only real sport I participate in now is riding my Valk!

Clint eastwood said it best-mans got to know his limits. That being said-it;s also easier said than done. Jabba sometimes when i finally get my a$$ out the bed some days i feel 40 again-but most days specially with a front comin thru- i know exactly how old i r. Everyone before me gave you good advice-now comes the difficult part-actually heeding it. The one thing i've already found out-IT DANG SURE AINT GETTIN NO EASIER. The day will come when i can't throw a leg over-sure as god made little green apples it will-BUT I AINT GONNA TAKE IT LAYIN DOWN. After they close the lid-i plan on kickin it. Ride Safe

When I go to the fitness place, I always walk about a mile, then do stretching exercises, and then use the Nautilus machines.

i hurt my right wrist when i was younger, hurts all the time now but I can't do anything about that. That'll probably stop me from riding eventually.

I'm not complaining tho. At one month shy of my 83rd birthday, i can still do most things but I'll be needing some new parts soon.

As most of you know, everything that you did wrong to your body will come back in spades later on in life.

WOW SOLO

83 years old is an amazing age  to still be riding. Whatever your routine is, bottle it!

I'm creeping up on 65 and still hope to be riding 10 years from now!

I guess I'm getting smarter since I just turned %) in January,I made some hurdles for my 16 year old daughter who is in track,I made them out of pvc. So were at the grass area the other day to practice and were done and the wife unit says " Do the hurdles Rod" I responded rather quickly, " NO FREAKING WAY, I DONT NEED A GRAON MUSCLE PULLED! " or something else, who knows. It's funny my wife and I have just been talking about the aches and pains lately, MEDIC!

You don't have to quit, just modify it.  I play softball in the over 60 league now, and walk 5 miles twice a week instead of run.  Still can do a mile run in under eleven minutes, though.  Used to do under six when I was in my 30's. Hoser

Why didn't you tell me that 30yrs ago? !  tickedoff Cheesy

That is actually something I have had drilled into me by my elders ("you'll regret that when you're older") and recently by my doctors. I HATE it when they are right! Now I'm SCREWED ! Undecided

Some learn by reading, some by watching others...the rest of us have to piss on that electric fence ourselves!  Embarrassed

See, ya working out and ya still get hurt.  Cheesy I know how you feel, esp since I'm ALOT younger then you.  Wink I fell 4 times this year from the ice. Sat I was walking and fell to my knees twisting my rt foot and felt/heard a pop. Sprained my ankle. I never fell this many times in all my years of drinking.  Evil The only 'pleasure' I get out of it is seeing my partner laugh till she about pisses herself. I use to bull ride in my late teens for a few years. I stated feeling it in my mid 20's. Always got back problems and my elbows want to lock up. All this just helps my pain tolerance build up. As long as I can get it off the kick stand or set for hours in a tattoo parlor, life is good.

I KNOW.  That's what SUCKS!

This is for OTHER people.  not ME!!

I have started looking over the top of my glasses to red too.  It flat out pisses me off.

10 years of football was hell on my body.  I am paying for it now.  And will for the rest of my years I expect.

The Navy was not easy on me either, as I broke my back on the boat.

I broke both arms once.  Dislocated fingers.  Dislocated shoulder.  Dislocated knee-cap.

It just sucks that's all.  I knew ya'll would feel me.
