I was driving up to cleveland today and ABC news came on the radio with a story of how the prez is willing to work with repulicans and cut more spending if they will fund the government for more then two weeks at a time. then the mr President said in that chiddingly-reproachful-harvard law faculty room-haughty somewhat arrogant way he addresses the republicans (and by extension US because WE sent them to congress) "its irresponcible to fund the government for two weeks at a time"
WOW Mr President! impecable timing as always, this is the 5th of march. which means yesterday was the friday the 4th, the day the last continuing resolution was set to expire. the democrates have kicked the can down the road for more then a year passing CR after CR and we're the irresponcible ones? they didn't pass a budget for the last year. why? because it would have been even a worse shelacking in November if they passed a budget with all the spending they did by continuing resolution. a budget is required BY LAW in the constitution, not apparently if your a democrate.
I'm giving the floor now to Mr Bobbo and others that they may explain this all to us.

While I'm honored and flattered that you would give up your soapbox for me and others, I'm not an Obama apologist. How congress interacts with the president is usually pure politics, and we can't affect it much, so I don't have any revelations to make. Maybe some of the more astute partisan political scholars can answer this better than me!

Here's the deal, if the Dems and pres won't agree to a 100 billion spending cut in one bill, they may agree to 4-8 billion dollar cuts in a long series of two week extensions of govt funding (all year). And while piecemeal, this does have the benefit of allowing discussion of each series of cuts in more detail. I'd prefer the 100 billion in one bill, but I'll take the cuts any way we can get them.
While not large from the macro view, I want to see NPR/PBS entirely de-funded ASAP.

100 billion goes no where near far enough though. Here is a fine illustration if not a bit sarcastic

very sarcastic, snarky even. yes 100 billion is a drop in the bucket the budget as aposed to discretionary spending, both are FY 2008. when you get some airhead that says the pentagon is 60% of the budget. set them straight, its the discretionary side of the budget we can't use a scapel as the president suggests, because for the last decade they have been using miracle grow on the governement. budgets for the various departments in the gov have grown TRIPLE digits.

I think the libs WANT the deficit to expand & welcome the inevitable result. The economic chaos that will ensue will allow them {the libs} to set things up the way they want. The so-called conservatives we have had in office are not a whole lot better, no guts, no vision. That's how we got here. Time is running out. If REAL change is not made soon we all will suffer. We can argue endlessly about the minor points & squabble about "who did what" in the past but it is VERY clear what needs to be done. I am not optimistic about the will & abilities of the new congress. I think it will have to get worse before anything real gets done. God help us.
