I have a friend who swears that his 1500 wing has the exact same engine setup as my valk.  I softly tried to correct him, and brought up the six carb thing, BUT NOOOOOO....."The local dealer had just tuned his bike and his six carbs were still perfectly syncronized".

I had always understood that the block was the same but that the Valk had:
1.    six carbs vs. 2 on the wing.
2.    A hotter cam setup on the valk.

Am I wrong, or rather how wrong am I?
Any other differences in the drive train that I am overlooking?

Straight cut gears on the Valkyrie, a little noisier but stronger than the helical cut Wing gears. Not sure on the ratio's.

the trans and rear gearing are different, hence the slower but more fuel efficient wing..and yes the cams are different as well as the carbs...

the only reason I know is that I looked it up when I had the chance to purchase a GW rear end and tire from a trike conversion for 50 bucks...not the same but I should of bought it anyway. coulda added it to all my other "parts", lol

I should also mention that with the cobra pipes I can't hear a damn thing other than the motor..

I like the little bit of extra noise, makes it sound like it is really running.  Smiley

I own both, a 98 Valk and a 96 SE Wing.  The Valk will run away and hide from the wing anywhere and any time so long as the Valk can gas up at about 2/3s the range of the Wing.  The wing is quiter than the Valk by a bunch, easier to ride and then theres the rest of the comforts.  That cruise control, intergrated brakes, reverse, self-canceling turn signals, accurate fuel gage, cb and stereo, and the capability to take along a weeks worth of cloths.

I have been told that starting in 1997 the wing got a bunch of engine and transmission parts from the Valkyrie.  Don't know if these changes made the wing that much improved over the older models.  One can only hope he can ride long enough to wear out either machine.

Fuel consumption is the Wing will go about 6 miles futher on a gallon of gasoline.  Stock my Valk will get about 36mpg and the Wing will get 42mpg ridding conditions being the same.  Bottom line is those 6 carbs suck more fuel than the Wings 2.  Horsepower does come at a cost.

Found this info on the goldwingfacts.com site:
1997 saw the SE's lower underbelly panels colour matched to the main panel colour, helping to make the Goldwing look more streamlined. Symbols instead of text on the handlebar switchgear made it easier to read them no matter where you came from. Some important but invisible changes inside the engine were carried out too. The clutch was stronger and some of the components from the Valkyrie engine (main bearings, piston & ring sets, valve springs, con-rod bolts) were now shared with the Goldwing. The Valkyrie final drive was fitted to the Goldwing as well, as was much of the gearbox which gave marginally cleaner and smoother shifting. Not many folks noticed the difference, myself included and I happily rode my new '97 SE for three years oblivious to the differences until I started doing a bit of research on the different model changes.

Yardboy-re-horsepower comes at a cost. Back in my dirt track days and my drag strip days we were always asked-HOW FAST YA WANNA SPEND. That still holds true today.Ride Safe.

Yes sir, that rule has applied during my 50+ years of hot rodding.  I still say the biggest bang for the buck I ever spent was the addition of the Dyna 3000 on the Valkyrie.  Premium fuel and setting 7 is good for 4mpg increase plus globs of torque at midrange.  For serious work I have a switch to ground the dyna that takes out 4 degrees.  Anyone thinks the Valkrie won't scream well past 7000 rpm hasn't tried it.  Read the posts made by those that did back in the 02 time frame.  Three free tips for anyone wanting maxinum torque/power, make sure that no valves are adjusted to tight and the last two are are air flow, K&N filter and raise the front of that fuel tank.  Thats the combination that works best on my machine.

I grew up with such toys as a 1973 Kaw Z1 and 1980 Yamaha XS1100SG.  The Valk drives a little like each of those machines.  The Z1 and Valk would have been one heck of a drag race.  The XS1100 would have walked away down in the low gears.  However, its my belief that the Valkyrie would have pulled either machine on a 5th gear roll on at any speed.
