And on this problem, Alan Simpson is not the only one who is "guilty as charged".  Not by a long shot!...Jim

             THIS SENIOR CITIZEN NAILED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        Alan Simpson, Senator from Wyoming, Co-Chair of Obama's deficit
        commission, calls senior citizens the Greediest Generation as he
        compared "Social Security" to a Milk Cow with 310 million teats.
        August, 2010.

        Here's a response in a letter from a unknown fellow in Montana... I
        think he is a little ticked off ! He also tells it like it is !

        "Hey Alan, let's get a few things straight...

        1. As a career politician, you have been on the public dole for FIFTY
        YEARS.

        2. I have been paying Social Security taxes for 48 YEARS (since I was 15
        years old. I am now 63).

        3. My Social Security payments, and those of millions of other
        Americans, were safely tucked away in an interest bearing account for
        decades until you political pukes decided to raid the account and give
        OUR money to a bunch of zero ambition losers in return for votes, thus
        bankrupting the system and turning Social Security into a Ponzi scheme
        that would have made Bernie Madoff proud.

        4. Recently, just like Lucy & Charlie Brown, you and your ilk pulled the
        proverbial football away from millions of American seniors nearing
        retirement and moved the goalposts for full retirement from age 65 to
        age 67.  NOW, you and your shill commission is proposing to move the
        goalposts YET AGAIN.

        5. I, and millions of other Americans, have been paying into Medicare
        from Day One, and now you morons propose to change the rules of the
        game. Why? Because you idiots mismanaged other parts of the economy to
        such an  extent that you need to steal money from Medicare to pay the
        bills.

        6. I, and millions of other Americans, have been paying income taxes our
        entire lives, and now you propose to increase our taxes yet again. Why?
        Because you incompetent bastards spent our money so profligately that
        you just kept on spending even after you ran out of money. Now, you come
        to the American taxpayers and say you need more to pay off YOUR debt.

        ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
        To add insult to injury, you label us "greedy" for calling "bullshit" on
        your incompetence. Well, Captain Bullshit, I have a few questions for
        YOU.
        1. How much money have you earned from the American taxpayers during
        your pathetic 50-year political career?
        2. At what age did you retire from your pathetic political career, and
        how much are you receiving in annual retirement benefits from the
        American taxpayers?
        3. How much do you pay for YOUR government provided health insurance?
        4.  What cuts in YOUR retirement and healthcare benefits are you
        proposing in your disgusting deficit reduction proposal, or, as usual,
        have  you exempted yourself and your political cronies?
        It is you, Captain Bullshit, and your political co-conspirators who are
        "greedy".. It is you and they who have bankrupted America and stolen the
        American dream from millions of loyal, patriotic taxpayers.  And for
        what?  Votes.  That's right, sir.  You and yours have bankrupted America
        > for the sole purpose of advancing your pathetic political careers.  You
        know it, we know it, and you know that we know it.
        And you can take that to the bank, you miserable son of a bitch."
Might have been interesting, had it been factual.  But it is a fact... no one touches senior benefits because they vote.  So education, the youth benefits, gets killed... just look at any state budget cutting plan.  Or the plans the Republiclowns in Congress are putting up.
Look to the chart at the bottom.  Looks like the Democrats have been in control of the legislature far more than the Republicans over the past 50 years.  The legislature determines the budget.
The raping of social security took place on their watch.  So, be careful about throwing rocks when ya live in a glass house.
Only two times to my knowledge over the past 50 years has the budget been in any shape to be balanced.  Under Truman and then again under Clinton both Democrats.  However, under Truman the Republicans controlled the Senate and House for one term and the Senate for another.  Under Clinton both were held by Republicans for 6 of his 8 years.
This latest set of Republicans under Bush were completely irresponsible fiscally IMHO.  However, the Democrats didnt exactly act as a brake.
Sorry, but you got it wrong this time, Strong Eagle.  Up until Lindon Johnson and the Democrats voted to put the Social Security Funds in the General Fund where they had access to them, the Social Security Funds were protected against any use except to make Social Security Payments to those who had paid into the system and were legally entitled to receive them.  Since then, the Social Security Fund has been used by both parties to fund programs that they needed a little more money to fund.  And yes, I was old enough at the time to remember when it happened.  I was with the 4th Inf. Div. over next to the Ho Che Min Trail that you boast about seeing.  I have seen it also, only I saw it 42 years before you did...JTL tickedoff
Obama care cut $500 Billion from Medicare.  Seniors now have to "fit" themselves into "plans" and carry higher co-insurance.  There are more and more physicians opting out of seeing seniors and many are now reducing the number of seniors they will see in a day.
Those town hall meetings over a year ago, where representatives were getting berated by their constituants comprised mainly seniors who were actually informed.  If you recall, Dems stopped having these town hall meetings because they couldn't keep defending the take aways from seniors as it got closer and closer to the vote.  Then the secret meetings took place and the bribes to certain states occurred.  Then they voted, but didn't know what they voted for.  "You'll have to pass it to see what's in it". And now, to date, almost 800 entities across the country are exempted from the "law" as they can't afford it and seniors are being squeezed.
I don't know why you call it 'boasting', PharmBoy.  I went to see what it was like... and not in some aircon tour bus.  I rode 1200 kilometers of the trail on a 250cc bike.  I slept in the jungle in a mosquito netted hammock.  We nearly ran over a cluster bomb getting to our camp site one evening.  I ate minimalist food because we only had our bikes to carry food.  A great deal of this trip was to understand and experience what you, other Americans, and the Vietnamese had to live through.  I did it when I was 61, so you might understand that if you did it 42 years ago, you and I are pretty much the same age.
No, I didn't end up in Vietnam back then... and for damn sure, I've got a far better understanding of what you went through than 99.9 percent of the rest of the population that never made it there.  It is a hard enough place to live without an enemy trying to kill you.  You have my deepest respect, as do all Vietnam veterans.
Wayne, Jim is close to my age...in his 70's as I recall.  Anyway....wondering why the mine didn't go off. Do you think it's because they deteriorate with time or the weight was insufficient. There have been so many people injured from that stuff left over from the war, I'm surprised it didn't go off. Not being an infantry man I'm not familiar with the workings of that piece so I'm just shooting blind here. You called it a "cluster bomb" but it looks more like a mine....or is that actually part of a bomb. Can someone "edjicate" me?  Wink
John, the cluster bombs of that era where dropped from a plane by the hundreds at a time or shoved out the rear of an artilery shell by a small charge in the front of the projectile.  Upon ejection there was two spring loaded little wings that poped out which made the bomb spiral down to the ground and upon hitting the ground the "bomb" part had a trigger which was pointed toward the ground and set off a small charge which was just enough to propell it up about waist high until the main explosion took place, sending hundreds of small projectiles in all directions.  They were only effective against troops in the open or those who did not have overhead cover....JTL
John, these things aren't actually mines.  They were dropped as a bomb, each bomb containing many 'bomblets'.  (see http://www.maginternational.org/lao-pdr-publications and http://www.stopclustermunitions.org/the-problem/).  It didn't explode because we never got closer than a couple of feet to it.  In the area we camped out, many of these had been dug out.  We reported this one.
Sounds like nasty suckers. Would you believe they're having...or had, a similar problem here in the Orlando area. Seems there is now a grade school and a couple of home developments on what was a practice bombing range during WWII. They found some live ordnance a while back while doing some work with a dozer. Didn't think it was still live....until the bomb squad lit it off. Surprise...surprise, blew a hole in the ground big enough to bury a truck. Then they started looking at the history of the area and realized what they had. The Corps of Engineers came in and scanned the entire area, dug up all kinds of live stuff. The school was evacuated for a time, as were some of the homes. They still find some stuff ever so often but apparently it's pretty well recovered now. Imagine your house built over an old bomb, now covered with landfill. One night during one of our frequent electrical thunder bumpers.....boom....there goes my king size bed and the dresser into orbit.
