Changed the left rear wheel bearing last fall and setting around this winter was thing about the rear wheel spacer. crazy2 My question is does this spacer have to be their? And what does it do? Besides making it harder to get the left bearing out. Looks like there is too much slop from side to side to be a spacer. Has anyone taken it out? And if so have you had any problems?

Which spacer are you talking about?  The one inside the wheel or the one between the left wheel bearing and the frame?

either way, spacers are there for a reason.

I doubt very seriously that the Honda engineers would have a part in there that wasn't necessary.

I am no mechanic - the Tech board could vouch for that!  Cheesy

But I think removing the spacer would mess up the drive shaft alingment pretty quick.  Undecided

The spacer inside the wheel is there for a reason.

It takes up the space between the two bearing inner races making it one solid piece(when combined with the rest of the rear end).  Without it, the bearings would last until you torqued the axle nut, and that would be the end of them(or soon thereafter).  Bearings of that type aren't designed to have any side load.

That's referred to as a thrust washer and does have a purpose....while out in Washington State I had a flat tire and had a dealer replace the tire and he left the thrust washer out and I rode the bike all the way back to Va.  When I got home I noticed alittle play in the wheel and decided to pull it....it had damaged the inter hub and rubbed the backside of final drive flange...and I had to replace the wheel... I probably could have just put 2 thrust washers in, but decided to just replace the wheel.....put it back in.... cooldude
