The tank emblem, and the '02 will have a chromed radiator hose covering, the '98 has a blacked out one...
I'm sure there are a few other small things like that, but mechanically they're the same thing... As I recall, only the '97's have anything mechanically different about them (The carbs were different in '97 I believe...)

Serk-just as an aside-april 21 2011 9 years smoke free. Well done to you sir. Congrats to you! And thanks! Yeah, the wheels got shinier, the seat got slightly less sucky (If any of 'em actually have stock seats anymore?) and the bearings got changed... I'm sure there are a few other small things, but they're minor... (Someone please pipe up with the other things that changed, now I'm wracking my brain trying to remember!)

From Dag's site http://www.valkyrienorway.com/MODEL%20DIFFERENCES.htmlEngine: • “Made in USA” no longer appears on engine. • Engine Coolant Temp Indicator Unit eliminated (sensor now directly controls LED). Frame: • I/S -style turn signals (no screws in lense face). • New Seat design (I/W ‘97-’99). • Seat height changed to 28.9” from 29.1”. • Chrome wire wrap added to lower radiator hose. • “Made in USA” no longer on rear seat. • Tank badge changed from “F6” to Maidenhead design. • Heavier rear brake rotor (caused different wheel, caliper bracket and rotor mount bolts). • Extra protective boot on start relay. • Polished rear transfer case. • Lower triple clamp P/N change.http: 2001 Polished & clearcoated wheels • Front wheel is only machined outside of brake rotor shadow.

It's only an opinion but it has been mentioned more than once that the 97s and 98s had more torque. I have ridden my 98 and many 99s and up and believe it is true. (but that's just a opinion without any explanation)

If I remember correctly... the face of the horn was black on 97 - 98. In 99 the horn was chrome plastic. Still in the same funky spot.

99-01 added the Interstate model. Not what you asked, but there it is. Fairing, trunk, radiator mounted air deflection pods with a foglight option, different ICM and carb springs, single molded front/rear seat. Cooling air scoops under the engine guard. Interstate models intended for the Japanese market had the Goldwing reverse gear, US and European models did not. Redline, where is that pic? Fred.
