I get to ride all year, just hot as heck in the summer, I know that you from the ice and cold are crying crocodile tears  :'( But the last 2 weeks with work and out of town visitor (not a rider) only got up in mtns one time for breakfast and 50 mi round trip.  My buddie called yesterday and was telling me about his great ride so I had to get out today as I was not working.

Up I-10 about 25 miles and then up the back way to Joshua Tree Park.

it is always a good ride.  Up from sea level to 2500' - 5000' in elevation with lots of different plant life at different levels.  Lots of curves that aren't very difficult as you head up to and through the park.  About 60 miles up through park to 29 Palms where the marines train in the desert.

i stopped at an ocotillo grove at a view point and a couple from Canada came over talking about the Interstate they have and really like.  they took my picture in front of an ocotillo plant.  these things can get up to 20-25' and in summer look like a bunch of dead sticks.  With rain, they bloom with small green leaves and then flower.  Good bit of rain over winter so they are all green.

After leaving the park, I head out through the Mojave Desert about 75 miles.  Nothing but creosote bushes and long straight road.  Hardly any traffic.  There were a few slight changes in direction and one "turn" in the 75 mi.  I mostly just took my time, but out alone on that straight road with no traffic, I did test out the higher numbers on the speedo for a short while.  Very smooth.

Finally stopped at Desert Center Cafe for a burger.  Built in 1922 by Stephen A. Ragsdale, also known as “Desert Steve”, a desert eccentric of the first order.  Nothing else around except a single room post office and abandoned garage.

So home now after 240 mi, having adult beverage and happy to have been able to get out and ride.

Nice ride report. I also got in a spectacular ride all day today. It's my last riding day in Tucson;  Sad  so I went north to Florence & Globe and a big loop back to Tucson; about 400 mi. I wish I would have remembered my camera.... She goes back in the trailer tomorrow and then home Friday. I won't be able  to ride again until sometime in April or so... still 2+ feet of snow on the ground at home !!

My grandmother used to live in Asheville and our "family" vacations were in station wagon from Florida to Franklin, NC in the summers (5 kids, WTH, though I love them all).  It was like Chevy Chase's Vacation  crazy2.  But i did get a chance to go on BRP in cage lots of times.  Really nice, but SLOW sometimes.

would like to come there on the Valk now.  maybe i can get a trip there sometime.

donaldcc,

Been out that way a few times.  Will be leading a group of 17 vehicles out through the Palm Desert/Salton Sea/El Centro area the first week of May.  Lots of wide open out there.  Unfortunately, all of the vehicles have at least 4 wheels, so my trip will not be as enjoyable as yours.

cooldude If you are in that area it might be fun to get over to the Glamis Dunes.  At south side of Salton Sea.

Going right past it, but won't have more than time to drain the lizard.  Enjoy the weather while you can.

Great ride report. cooldude Thanks!

I have taken I-10 and been in that area numerous times. I do a lot of business in Anaheim, and until recently my mother lived in the Phoenix area. I drove through there for over 15 years. Also have a customer across the border from Yuma. I love driving through the desert. Your report brought it all back.

Maybe I'm weird, but I really love all those windmills in your area. Smiley

Love the Southwest!! I've played around in that area a bit the last few years. Heading down to Calexico May 8th from Kelseyville Ca. Spend the night at my brothers house then try for an Ironbutt to Springfield Mo. on my way home to Chicago.

I've ridden that area many times over the years.  First time was in 1975 when I came back from deployment and had just bought a 1975 GL1000.  Made the mistake of riding from MCAS El Toro to Needles across the desert in a short sleeve red T-shirt in the middle of the day.  Arms looked like the T-shirt by the time I got to Needles. Came back through the Amboy turnoff.  Always enjoyed the rock formations on the side of the road.  People make their names and such along the side of the roads with rocks and bottle and such.

In 1987 while traveling with my family to the grand Canyon we had a private plane land right in front of us and just taxi off the road.gives a lot of respect for what our forefathers went thru to migrate to the pacific Ocean.

Good report.
