Concerning loud pipes. I don't know about other riders but I have personally been saved from close encounters with cagers by mine. When passing a vehicle on a multi-lane road and a cager just ahead/beside me starts to enter my lane a hard downshift works just as well or better than the horn to let them know I am there. It's easy to see them become aware of you by watching their head as you do it.

What constitutes self defense when you know some one is delibertly trying to run you off the road? I mean seriously would that not be any different than protecting yourself against a robber a mugger of the nature if you have a concealed carry permit? I've asked police the same question and they don't have an answer to it. You guys say carry pennies marbles and ball bearings. Have you heard of strike jacks? They are used in union strikes and work really well at flattening tires. Three nails twisted and bent together and a spot weld with all ends ground to a point will get a tire every time sadly the innocent vehicle may get one to if the intended vehicle didn't pick them all up as they hit the pavement.

But I'm still trying to find the legal answer what would constitute self defense when scenerios as you guys have mentioned do happen. Maybe someone here here knows.

The other thing to consider with loud pipes is, not everyone has a tight/quiet new cage. I just bought the first cage with working air conditioning I've owned in 10 years. And it's a 97 dodge truck. Obviously, in the warm months, my cages are parked with the windows up or driven with the windows down if the sky isn't leaking.

Jabba,

+1 cooldude

You are right on! I won't even contemplate passing unless it is clear and I can get around quickly. I don't just worry about the truck putting me in the median (been close several times!) but I worry just as much about the truck shredding a tire. Saw that happen to a guy on a bike once, and it was not pretty! Sad

ALWAYS get on the throttle, and get around the truck asap.  Do NOT pass him going just a little faster.  Get the job done, and get out in front.

MP

Yep +1 there.

I hang back until there is room for me in front... then flick the wick, and get in front.  Then back to normal.

I tend to ride a little faster than everyone else around me.  I call it being forwardly mobile.  I think it's the safest way to be.

YMMV.

I never argue with a semi when on my valk. If I keep items in my bike to throw at them then I am worse than they are IMHO. I am not in that big of a hurry with a death wish from a semi. Let them pass. I am riding the bike to enjoy life and not lose or win an argument with a semi.

After driving truck most of my life and motorcycles and cars and pickup trucks-you don't have to travel very far to meet buttheads in any of the aforementioned vehicles. They are everywhere out there!! The trick is recognizing them before they get you. And no-i'm not always sucessful recognizing the idiots. Just pat attention and RIDE SAFE. coolsmiley

affirmative! there are some truck drivers I wouldn't give the keys to a moped. some seem intentionally stuck on stoopid  uglystupid2

I agree. In the ambulance once, a bike was in my blind spot. Signaled to pass but heard him. Saved his life. Folks think you can only hear bikes from the back. Sound waves travel in all directions. I can hear bikes 3 miles down the road before they reach the house.

not bad rapping truckers, there are good and bad in all walks of life. but i was on my way to sturgis one year when i watched a bunch of dead guys (people riding crotch rockets) pulling up next to semis at 75 mph with a piece of chalk, making white sidewalls on the trucks tires. real bright, huh ?

little wonder some truckers hate bikes. it always amazes me how many harley stickers you see on semi trucks, huh ?
