On Friday, the '03 Standard was dropped off at California Sidecar (in Virginia) for trike install. We are picking up the finished product this Friday.



Of course, I get all the rear end parts back, except for the U-Joint (they keep that to modify for the next one... the one from the last Valkyrie conversion goes on mine).

I will eventually be selling/trading pretty much all of it... EXCEPT the final drive (sorry guys). I am going to put that up for use on my I/S if/when mine wears out.

Question is, if you were putting this up on the shelf in a box for, hopefully, a number of years... would you do anything special to guard against any type of corrosion, etc? Leave the oil in it?

I've got a couple rat-holed all I did was spray all the parts down with WD40 and wrapped them in plastic ( trash bag ) before storing in a box in the garage.

A spray type cosmoline would be the very best way to protect your parts. I use a product made by Zep Manufacturing. Good stuff, need cleaning solvent to remove the cosmoline.

I will have a post on the whole process (with lots of pics) this weekend. We left two of those disposable cameras with them and they promised to take lots of pictures. So far, really a nice bunch of folks; it has been enjoyable and painless...

As far as cost... for us, we had to save for a couple years for this... it is an "investment" that's for sure... but I always figured, they don't put pockets in coffins, so let's enjoy it while we can (the kids can make their own way  Wink )

Anyway... total... including the cost of the '03 Standard, the trike kit (w/install), and an 8° rake kit = $16K... give or take. We stole the Valk though... 15,000 miles.... perfect condition (and I mean perfect)... for $5300.

There are some oils available that are for engine storage that may work for storing the diff.  the challenge may be to ensure that there is a film of oil on the bearings etc. so that they are protected and that the lube doesn't dry out and contaminate the compartment.

I believe that these turn to a vapor and penetrate that way - here is a link to an example of such a product.
