I am switching ISPs ... again...
Went with Millenicom this time after getting boned by Virgin Mobile. I bought the virgin mobile modem with expectations of using their "unlimited plan" for $60/ mnt. Well two weeks after I bought the modem they capped their plans at 5G... Nice.

Anyway, the problem I'm having is that Millenicom uses Verizon where I live and I'm having problems with my service disconnecting all the time, if I am running on my external antenna. The signal is at -67 but it drops service. If I plug it straight into my computer the signal is much lower and though it never drops it slows to a crawl at times.
So I'm guessing that my Netgear broad band router is the culprit.

So I'm on the hunt for a better router.
By the looks of the reviews I'd say Cradlepoint is probably the best one to go with. The CRT500 and the MBR1000 are so close in price that I don't know why I would go with the 500.

There is a "new in the sealed box" on CL in Sunrise Fl, to far to drive, but I may be able to get it for around $100 vs the cheapest price I can find on the web $160. But I'm not real comfortable sending someone in sunrise $100 and hope he sends me a nice new router.
I missed the sale at newegg they had it on sale last weekend for $109.  tickedoff

Looking for comments, I've already spent a ton of money on this and I'm cringing at pulling out my wallet again...

Can't speak to those routers, never heard of em.  But, I've got a spare Linksys 4 port Wireless G Router you can try if you like.  Pay shipping to try it out... if it works keep it, if not, throw it out.

I have Verizon Fios and they provided their own Modem/Wireless Router.  So now I have their Westel DSL Modem and the Linksys Router just sitting in a drawer.... if that might help you out.

Sorry can't help with that.  I did have a USB modem when I had cable a few years ago, but it actually did both USB and Cat IV.   Good luck....

Okay, so... External antenna plugs into USB modem plugs into Router, then computers plug into that, is that correct?

And if you're bypassing the router, you're going external antenna > Modem > Computer? Or is there some other connection in there?

Just trying to understand exactly how things are configured. I'll never say never, but I just can't figure out how the router could be causing service disconnects like you're describing...

I believe he said his modem output is USB to the Router input (which should be USB), and then of course from the router to the PC via cable or wireless.   A bad router will cause problems..... signal loss, drop signal etc.  I have had to replace a modem or two due to problems.

I believe I understood him to say that he also plugged the USB modem directly to the PC, bypassing the modem, and the signal dropped as did the speed.

I’ve got an extra router that will do DD-WRT (no USB on it though), if you’re interested feel free to PM me. Can probably sell / ship it for $25 or so.
I’m currently running two of these models bridged across my house so I have no dead zones of signal, and I’m quite happy with it. Previously was running Tomato and I like DD-WRT better.

NetGear MBR624GU doesn't come up on the supported devices list (http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Supported_Devices#Netgear). If you're fairly tech savvy I'd suggest looking into a different router that is compatible.

external antenna plugs into usb modem... usb modem plugs into broadband router... computer connects WiFi to the router.
I can watch the connection status, it shows a decent signal -79 or so, but it disconnects and reconnects at random. Just on my Verizon modem not my AT&T modem. The AT&T modem stays connected most of the time.

If I plug the usb modem into my laptop and watch the connection manager it has a lower signal like -97--101 but it does not disconnect, it's just slow.

The Router has drivers in it for the different modems. I think that the Verizon modem isn't as compatible with the router as the AT&T is.

On the Millenicom forum they pretty much all recommend cradlepoint routers.

I found a new one on CL but I'm not real comfortable send money to a CL guy in hopes it's legit.
