Looks like I've got one exhaust stud that's stripped out. Anyone know what size helicoil I need?

How bad of a job is this to do? (i do have a cherry picker for getting the bike in the air)

please and thanks

That is the last resort I would suggest.

Have you investigated to see if there are additional threads deeper in the hole?

If so, you can go further and use some thread locker.

If memory serves me correct, it's an 8mm, the part that bolts on the pipe is a 6mm.  Then again, my mother and grandfather, an uncle, and aunt, all had Alzheimer’s? So I might not remember that correctly.....

most times since the part of the stud that the nut screws onto is smaller than the part that screws into the head and breaks off with enough left to unscrew with vice grips or a similar tool.

thanks guys

if i remember right the threads stripped out when i removed the exhaust last year. i'm getting a popping noise when i engine brake to decelerate, which i've been told could be exhaust leaking, so i planned to put a helicoil in to fix this stud

Aluminum block, broken stud, drive the bike to a shot and have them do the heli coil. I had 2 studs on a VW block a few years ago done, because I wanted to have someone with experiance do it.

I didn't want to practic on such an expensive piece of metal. Cost me $40 to remove the broken studs and put steel sleeves in.

Hi,
Did you try running a tap through it and seeing if the threads would clean up? I had one brake on my VTX and I was able to go to Ace Hardware and get a step down stud, 10 to 8 in that case. I taped the hole the next size and put the stud in no problem.

helicoil is easy to do but also easy to screw up.If you have any doubts about your ability have a mechanic or machinist do it
