Havent picked it up yet, but I test drove it on and off road today and sealed the deal. Hopefully I can pick it up tomorrow or Saturday. At any rate, its an 08' with 3100 miles. I paid $3600. Hopefully I didnt get burned. I thought it was a fair price.
Got a quick question or two for you guys.
First, where to you get info on those fire trails etc that you guys ride in the national parks, state parks, etc?
Secondly, I am thinking about putting on some hard bags. I had thought of using something like a 20mm ammo can. I saw a picture of one done that way. Any suggestions on frames etc and mounting kits for the stuff?
Any other accessories that you can think of that you feel would be handy?
I plan on adding a crash bar on the front to protect the plastic. Im leaning toward a Happy Trails one that I saw in a Google search. I think I will put a head light protector on as well, but I havent searched for that yet.

I've read too many reports of riders hurting their legs wiht hard cases. I got some $10 saddlebags off eBay. Do a Google search for forest service roads. http://www.fs.usda.gov/wps/portal/fsinternet/!ut/p/c4/04_SB8K8xLLM9MSSzPy8xBz9CP0os3gDfxMDT8MwRydLA1cj72DTUE8TAwjQL8h2VAQAMtzFUw!!/?navtype=BROWSEBYSUBJECT&cid=fsm9_029111&navid=360000000000000&pnavid=null&ss=110803&position=Not%2520Yet%2520Determined.Html&ttype=detailfull&pname=Chattahoochee-Oconee%2520National%2520Forest-%2520Maps http://www.fs.fed.us/maps/http://www.fs.usda.gov/wps/portal/fsinternet/!ut/p/c4/04_SB8K8xLLM9MSSzPy8xBz9CP0os3gDfxMDT8MwRydLA1cj72DTUE8TAwjQL8h2VAQAMtzFUw!!/?navtype=BROWSEBYSUBJECT&cid=fsm9_029111&navid=360000000000000&pnavid=null&ss=110803&position=Not%2520Yet%2520Determined.Html&ttype=detailfull&pname=Chattahoochee-Oconee%2520National%2520Forest-%2520Maps KLR 's ridden on dirt really trash the oil. I change mine every 1000 miles and it looks like sludge (oops) http://dratv.stores.yahoo.net/10kaatvmo.htmlAn aluminum skid plate. I've heard some monster rocks and stones smack mine. Once you've ridden the bike a few thousand miles spend some $$$ to upgrade the suspension fore and aft. Makes it a different bike.

Thanks for the info. I have actually had some thoughts about how the hard bags could catch your legs...

I have fallen off my KLR more times in the past year than I fell off a bike in the past 45 years. Apart from once the bike wasn't moving. Knee and elbow pads are a must. If you want to spend some $ then Bohn is the way to go. http://www.bohnarmor.com/catalog/products.php?cat=19YOU ARE going to fall off the KLR if you ride on dirt. FACT.

Well, I picked up the bike, got the tags and broke the old gal in right today. Ended up going to look at a field that a guy wanted me to plant in corn for him. He said... it was about 8 acres. Small, but I agreed to go take a look at it for him It ended up measuring 2.4 acres with the GPS and I had to go through a freaking gauntlet of obstacles just to see it. A pickup would never have went there. I have no idea why he thought a corn planter or a combine would get in there or how he would get a load of corn out. At any rate, I enjoyed the ride in, rough as it was, and was headed out. Very steep. I was riding out beside a wash that was about 3 feet deep. Hit a root that had held dirt. It was about a foot climb up and the front wheel hopped right up but the back wheel spun sideways toward the wash and I thrust a hoof out to catch the bike... but found nothing but air. Off we tumbled into the wash and by the time I found footing the bike was coming in on top of me. So.. down the hill we went LOL The bike ended up landing on my leg on that side and penning me. I took my free leg and kicked the bike up a bit and got the leg out and proceeded to recover the bike. Man we were in a rough place. At any rate, it broke the clutch lever off but there was enough of a stub left to get the job done. I have an aluminum wire welding spool gun so I will weld it back on tomorrow and place my order for the guards to protect against that in the future. While it was quite a tumble the bike and I are fine. No real damage. What a way to start a relationship LOL Pictures of the actual bike to follow tomorrow.

I have made a pact with myself that I WILL NOT go where it looks too rough. Be careful and don't let your testosterone jar cap get too loose. Now you see what I mean about the hard bags. Think how they would have been in relation to your legs!!!

Im ordering a Twisted Throttle centerstand, a set of barkbuster VPS handguards, a Kaoko throttle lock, Twisted Throttle crash bars & skid plate, Master cylinder guard. I still havent decided on what kind of crash bars for the back end or what kind of bags.

Im leaning heavily toward a set of Wolfman Expedition Dry bags and the rack they make for them. http://www.wolfmanluggage.com/Expedition/expd_dry_saddle_bags.html
I will likely get this duffle as well

Oh, forgot to mention... I am also thinking of changing the sprocket ratio. I would like it a touch lower since most of the bikes use will be around the farm with alot of off road. Perhaps changing it from a 15 tooth front 43 tooth rear, to a 14 tooth front and 43 tooth rear. That would give a -6.7% speed and + 6.7 torque. If that isnt enough I could change the rear up to a 45 tooth which at that point would result in a -10.8 speed and +10.8 torque.
Speaking of chains... any suggestions on lube? Its been a long time since I have had anything that wasnt shaft drive.

Belray lube. Goes on white and stays on. http://www.belray.com/bel-ray-super-clean-chain-lubeAlthough I use WD40 after runs less than 200 miles. PLEASE don't ANYONE tell me I'm wrong. MY CHOICE. I'm 10,000 miles into my new chain and it's wearing just fine. Don't be tempted to use a 13 front sprocket. Alternative soft luggage http://www.giantloopmoto.com/
