Beautiful east Tennessee ( GOD'S Country )

« on: March 19, 2011, 04:43:38 PM »

My friend Charlie rode down last night from the Ohio/Kentucky border. Charlie works all over the country and has rode as far away as Washington state just to hook up and ride with us his home is in Texas.I thought about taking us across Big South Fork into Kentucky however when we all hooked up for breakfast this morning the treehouse came up in conversation and Charlie had never been there...Sounds like a ride to me  Smiley Below is some pictures I took today of the 8 story if you count the crow's nest treehouse.

This is the man who built the treehouse he claims the Lord told him to build it...Horace Burgess...Today was the first time I met Horace and I've been here 8 or 9 times and have took several group ride's to here over the last 8 to 10 years.

Next picture I took of the bikes from the crow's nest.

Here's a few more pictures that show some of the treehouse...Check out how he did'nt cut any boards that by the way was gave to him from folks all over the area in fact a new load was dropped off while we was there from a local builder with lumber of all shapes and sizes.

Over the years I've been coming here the vandalism has been getting worse with all the windows busted out ,damage to all most everything . It has a church on the second floor and we was here a few years ago some sick bastard had s**t in the floor. While we was talking with Horace he said he has a man watching the place now.

I'm not 100% sure but from what I got out of the conversation the watchman lives here on the site in this .

When we left the treehouse we hit Hanging Limb Highway to Hwy 85 then to Hwy 52 toward Jamestown ( If you've never rode this loop its a must do and perfect for the art of motorcycling ). One of my ridin' buds was down here a few weeks ago and the dude that owns the BBQ joint told him  he is going to promote this loop to the motorcycle community with t-shirts ,stickers etc and call it " The Anaconda " .

Found some information on the www to add-on to this thread. I can tell you if its got 11 floors I could'nt find three of them...I counted ( 8 ) with the crow's nest you might could call the bell tower a floor if you wanted too I guess...( 9 ) Floor's high .........

Below is from the internet so you knows its true   Undecided

Think you had the world’s greatest treehouse as a kid? Well this guy’s got you beat. Horace Burgess’s treehouse is located somewhere near Crossville, Tennessee and stands over 97-feet tall thanks to the 80-foot white oak tree it was built around which also happens to be about 12-feet in diameter at its base. It has 11 floors, somewhere in the neighborhood of 8,000 to 10,000 square feet, a miniature basketball court and is held together by roughly 258,000 nails.

Horace Burgess’s treehouse may be as close to heaven as a body can get in Cumberland County.

It rises 97 feet into the sky, the support provided by a live, 80-foot-tall white oak 12 feet in diameter at its base. Six other trees brace the tower-like fortress, but Burgess says its foundation is in God.

“I built it for everybody. It’s God’s treehouse. He keeps watch over it,” said Burgess, who received his inspiration in a vision that came to him in 1993. “I was praying one day, and the Lord said, ‘If you build me a treehouse, I’ll see you never run out of material.”‘

And thus far, as Burgess sees it, the Lord has provided. Most of his materials are recycled pieces of lumber from garages, storage sheds and barns. Now into his 14th year of construction, he is not finished.

The treehouse has 10 floors, averaging nine to 11 feet in height by Burgess’s reckoning. He has never measured its size but estimates it to be about 8,000 to 10,000 square feet. He did count the nails that he has hammered into the wood — 258,000, give or take a few hundred. And he guesses he has sunk about $12,000 into the project.

“God used my hands to put every piece in place, but I had a lot of help,” said the 56-year-old landscape architect. He’s a country boy but lives in town and compares himself to Job of the Old Testament. His pale blue Paul Newman-like eyes beam and he wears an easy smile on his tanned face.

“I’ve always proclaimed it to be the world’s largest treehouse, and no one has ever challenged it,” Burgess said.

Joe, we made it point to stop there on our last eastern bike trip and it is really cool. It was amazing that he just kept going on this project. The day we were there someone fell when a board broke and even though the injury wasn't serious they were ranting about how dangerous it was and the government should shut it down. Someone finally told them they were not forced to be there and if they tought it was dangerous they should have left. I am leaving out all the obscenties in the conversation but the injured got the message and left abruptly. I love the fact that it's there, it's free, and it 's really a neat attraction. If anyone hasn't seen it, put on your bucket list. Ride Safe, Hef

Thanks Joe, Lucky 13, Wimp, and greg for the ride on Saturday.  Foe everyone I was the large one on the Goldwing.  The Treehouse was great to see.  I had heard you talk about it and glad you took me there.

Made it home sunday night.  Left out with plans to make it home saturday night and well I made a right turn, then a left turn, and then well I didn't make it home.  just did more roads.

Did cruise part of HWY 127 and thanks for the advise.  All told I did about 1,000 miles this weekend and enjoyed the wind.

Don't know if I'll see you in Houston for the Gathering of Fools.  Still haven't heard when I can leave up here. in KY.  But I'll let you know if I head that way.  I only need 3,900 miles to turn 100k IN 5 years on the Big Red land Elephant.

So again thanks.

Joe,

Each of us rides a little differently and for a different mix of reasons... 'our ride' is indeed unique. Sharing our experiences allows us all to experience a taste of what it looks like outside our own little boxes, and that's a marvelous and truly enriching thing! Viewing the roads, sites, oddities, characters, etc., through the eyes of another broadens the whole bike experience for all who see ride reports, and to benefit vicariously from the exhilaration of our friends... You and others do a remarkably grand job on these, and I can always easily put myself 'in your group' enjoying right along with the rest of you all the thrills and discoveries y'all come across... Thanks for all the effort it takes to do what you do... you make a difference, my friend...
