sad part is, he hit it right on the head. kids today care more about their phones than anything else. most of them are looking for convenience than something really nice-earned. yes there are a few but, overall, this generation is lazy and non committed to anything.

Dogg, quite talking about my grandkids like that. Yup, he hit the nail on the head. My grandkids would rather set around playing games on the Internet than being out in the shop trying to learn and helping out. Friday, my one of the middle grandson's, car quit running. He called and wanted me to come help him out. So I tried to talk him through the problem, and yupper, it was too no all. Told him to call a wrecker and have it hauled to the shop, and to park it in the back yard instead of in front of the shop door. Yup, it was dropped in front of the door. His dad got back from the Dells and about had a tissy over the car parked there as he figured we'd have to push it out of the way. Lucky for the G'kid, the big ole beast was just out of gas........ Poured some gas in it and drove it back out to where he normally parks. Questioned him about it way back when and he told me the computer said he still had 50 miles to empty. Yup, that firkin thing got disconnected and told him to watch the guage, when it got below 1/2 a tank to go gas it up..... Also, told him he was damn lucky his dad was still footing the maintenance and gas bill for him.. Told him, I didn't have a car at his age and I said the one his dad had was a piece of sheet he had to work on and repair daily. I had nicknamed that car F.O.R.D. even though it was a Plymouth. Fix overhaul repair daily. Plus he bought his own gas, tires and etc. He had bought it with his own $$$$, so he footed the bills on it with his own $$$$. Yeah, I know I'm a hard ass on my kids. PS: My son also bought his own insurance. Guess where this one's car is insured, yup, under the shop blanket policy. It is titled to the shop so it is insured under the shop policy. As Forrest Gump would say: “That's all I have to say about that.”

How true! Since I bought the Mazda Three, I've gotten on the Three forum. On the subject fuel mileage, everyone was quoting what they were getting by reading the computer generated numbers on the dash screen. When i mentioned how I checked fuel mileage (fill the tank, check the odometer, etc) they were speechless. I told them that the numbers they were seeing were good mainly for educating their foot, and told them I did the same at a younger age by hooking up a vacuum guage . silence.

My two boys couldn't be more different, when it comes to 'wrenching'... My oldest (22) knows the basics, but would rather just 'gas n go'. He made 'Deans List', so he ain't no dummy, but it's not an interest for him. When he comes home for a weekend, I check tire pressure, oil, belts, hoses, and generally give his car a good once over. If something 'ain't right', he will give me a call, and depending on the situation, we deal with it when he's home for a few days (He is a student 200 miles from home). My youngest (18) has had the desire to get greasy since he was small... He started when he was maybe 4 or 5, pulling up a chair next to my truck, climbing up and watching everything I was doing... What's that? What's this? How does this work? What does that do? He was, and still is a great extra set of hands, when working on the Valk! He looked for a car that had gauges rather than idiot lights, so he would 'know' how things were running, and cares for his car like he wants it to last forever! I'm kinda proud of my guys, but they do tend to get wrapped up in all their gadgets. Kids of today are growing up in a 'throw away' world... TV, DVD, Phone... If they break, or malfunction, the way of the world, is to toss it and get a 'new' one... I remember, when I was young, taking a bag of vacuum tubes, from the family TV, to the drug store (riding my bicycle), and using that huge 'Tube Tester', with the meeters and dials... Kept that ol' RCA running way past it's prime Our Milkman used to just walk right in to the kitchen, saying 'Fritz the Milkman' as he came in, put the full bottles on the counter, toss our dog a biscut, grab the empty bottles, and hit the road. Good old days, yes... But I don't know if I would go back... Black Dog

I got one that is a dedicated gear head, he's in knee deep when ever he gets to help grampa fix something. When he was 5 I took him to a local cruise night at orielly's in my old mustang. When we got there I noticed a turn signal not working, grabbed a phillips and started to pull the lense to check the bulb. He seemed interested, so I handed him the screw driver and took him through it step by step. Gave him a couple bucks and sent him inside to get an 1157 bulb by himself. Had him reassemble it step by step and he finished the job. He's been knee deep every since, bikes, cars, lawnmowers, it don't matter . He's a great kid! Hoser

My just turned 4 year old is going to be one of those I think.
I can't keep him out from under the car, or the bike, or me for that matter when I am wrenching. Or working on the house. Gotta watch him though because he doesn't have a lot of respect with the hammer. Sheet metal and sheet rock are fair game it seems.
RJ, I am the same type of hard ass you were. people think I am crazy. But I'll tell you. Ben will drop ANYTHING else to come hang out with me. No matter the plan. If I am doing it, he's "in".

I was at my Daddy's side when I was a kid. My first car was a '74 Chevy Nova 2 door. Daddy loaned me the money to buy it and I paid him back $25 a week from my part time job from the money I made bagging groceries. Learned to work on it myself with him beside me talking me through it.
