On the green monster

We rode in the Chris Evert Celebration of Smiles charity ride to benefit the hospital today. It was a 60 mile police escorted ride around Ft. Lauderdale. There were 800-1000 bikes in it. As we were heading west on I-595 only 10 miles or so into the ride we came up on a crash that didn't appear to be all that bad. There was an older man on the ground being attended to and I did see some blood on his head. Well my friend who is a Broward Sheriffs office motorman on the run called me after I got home and told me the guy died. Here's why he probably died, no helmet. It was a relatively slow speed crash, not paying attention, ran into the bike in front of him, falls and hits his head. A helmet, even a half helmet, and this guy probably would still be with us.
Pray for his family, they are the ones that have to live with this.
Please people, protect that fragile noggin, wear a helmet.

Scary. Really scary.

I won't ride in groups like that either.  Write them a check and stay out of the mess.

Yeah, we quit doing the group rides too. It seems there is always trouble.

I ride with the Pensacola FL Patriot Guard, and yes....you get the occasional doofus that cant deal with close in control, but the impact this group has on families is worth it..........ya just gotta keep the eyes open and be ready for anything.  I like to get there early and watch people arrive.  Rarely I use that intel to choose a better position in the ranks, normally there is no issue, we have strict  group riding rules that most follow well.  Sorry about the fella that died, prayers for the family.......I wear my helmet, but I respect the choice........America used to be about being free, and if you want to endanger yourself, you should be allowed to.

Alot of what ifs. Maybe he was dead before he hit the ground. Agree with Chris, freedom of choice.
