Wanting new shocks....and wanting the Valk lower (I'm tall, but legs not so much, and I'm finding myself more on my toes than flat foot when on the bike).  Appears the choices are Progressive or Works.  Leaning towards the Works Street Trackers or the Billet Trackers in 11".

Have a couple questions......

I've read that Works builds their shocks to fit the customer's requirements.....where as the Progressives are off the shelve one size fits all.....correct?

Those that have owned or currently own either brand, what are your opinions on the Works vs the Progressive HDs?

Any issues with an 11" shock handling wise?

Have a MC tire (Elite III) on bike now.  Will I need to do the cage-nut mod if I go with an 11" shock?

If you were buying shocks today, which ones would you buy?

btw.....we're not small people if that makes a difference when buying/comparing shocks.

I currently run the progressive 412's, and have no complaints...  That being said, I've heard rave reviews about Works shocks, and would consider going that way when I need new ones (I'm not a 'small' person either).

One of the sponsors for the VRCC is a Works distributor ( http://www.xf6-custom.com/partpages/valshock.html ).  Give Daryl at XF6 a call, and ask him to tell you about the good, bad, and ugly (if there is any), about Works shocks.  He's a good guy, rides one sweet Valk (with Works shocks), and will tell ya all ya need to know.

I have had both, although in std length.  Currently I have the 440's and like them a great deal. I had the Works shocks on my previous Valk and they were excellent.  You can adjust them for varying weight carrying without using a tool. The only reason I didn't get them on this Valk was $ - I found a used set of 440's - no complaints at all, but I'd prefer the Works shocks.

I have had 440 HD and Works steel trackers< still have.

Both good but a strong preference on the works shocks.

I had Billet Works shocks in 12 inch on my last Valk Tourer and have Progressive 430's on my '03 Standard.  I actually had some bottoming issues with my Works shocks.  Any yes I bought them brand new and they were made for my size, weight and riding style.  I dont have any problem with my Progressives.  I haven't heard of anyone going with 11 inchers.  I thought 11.5 was the lowest you could get away with.  I also have a 205/55 car tire on my bike and it sits pretty low.  11 inches may be pushing it.  Maybe someone else has done it though.

According to the order/spec sheet on the Works web site that I was looking at, there are only three versions and two sizes available for the standards/tourers.  There are more versions available for the Interstate however.

They listed the two sizes as 13" and 11".  Unless I read it wrong, I didn't see any other sizes available.  The versions listed were Steal Trackers, Street Trackers, and Billet Trackers....again, either in 13" or 11".

That's kinda why/what I'm asking?

Mine were the Billet Street Trackers.  I had them made for me specifically in a 12 inch length.  11 sounds awfully short to me.

Personally, I think going to eleven inches is asking for trouble.  I would not touch 11.5" either, but some have..... but I never heard of anyone going to 11.

If it was me  I'd get 12" shocks, a shorter seat and taller shoes.

I have 11.5" 412's. They've worked fine for me. Mine have LOTS of miles on them. Probably time for new ones.

BF, I have the 440's on a VTX and the Works shocks on my Valk. I much prefer the Works for a less harsh ride. Or maybe the VTX is just more harsh of a ride with or w/o the progressive shocks

The advise Black Dog gave as far as talking to Daryl @ XF-6 was great advise. He sold me mine and I'm totally happy with them. He will help you select the correct shock in the Works brand.

I also purchased the 6 degree rake kit from him and lowered the bike even more while adding slow speed handling. My Valk handles like a Shadow at slow speeds.
