On a skid?

I'd say a fork lift or a wrecker.

Can't you back the truck down in a ditch, open the gate, untie the bike and roll it out, off the skid?  The correct ditch depth is about what you often see as drainage along secondary roads (2.5 feet).

Near impossible to find a loading dock of the right height.

Course, you're looking for a dry ditch, not a muddy, slippery one.  And having another guy to help muscle the bike out of the truck and maybe out of the ditch is helpful.  But if you find the right place, it can be done alone.

If you do it in a public area, a Samaritan or two may help you out.

I was looking for a Utube or something on this but cannot find anything.  It is an old tried and true redneck procedure.

PS, don't get the truck stuck either.

Can you use a ramp off the tailgate and leave the skid there?

A lot of dual sport guys will simply find a grassy slope. Back the pick up, drop tailgate and use a ramp to unload the bike safely.

make sure you wear a helemt whilst loading/unloading.

Used to haul heavy equipment. Some of the heavy equip dealers have pickup truck height docks. Some parts houses and farm equipment dealers do also. Just something that might help. coolsmiley

I once went around the rail spurs until I found a loading dock that was the same height as the bed.  Getting the skid off may require you to put some PVC pipe under the skid and roll it off.  Home Depot  or Lowes guys might help also.  They have fork lifts.  I would love to know how you work it out.

I've loaded and unloaded bikes out of the back of my pickup truck using grocery store loading docks. Most of them are just about the same height as the tail gate of a standard p/u truck. And they'll most likely have a nice concrete ramp to ride down.  I've always asked the store manager first, but they didn't seem to mind.

Poor Ol Harry you gonna make it to the GOTFs at Hotglues this year? Really too close to miss and you'll have a great time. For you question I used a rollback wrecker to unload my bike out of a rented u-haul truck worked like a champ. I just backed the bike out on the bed after he adjusted the height of his bed to the height of the truck. Then he pulled forward lowered the bed and I rolled the bike off.

Most bike shops/dealerships have a ramp for loading and unloading bikes from the back of pick-up trucks.  Might call around and ask one if you could rent/use it for a bit and unload it there and load it back when your tirke is done.  Might need a helper to get it out and back in, but these places do it all the time.

Big Rig,it's just a light skid built of 2x6 rectangle tubing we built in my 18 wheeler rig up shop in Houston.A forklift can easily lift it.I just thought if I could find a lift it would be ez for someone to help & not make them sorry for getting involved. It doesen't weigh over 150lb.Which there is a fellow near where I'll be that has offered to help me out, thanks alot for your concern     HARRY
