I have a 99 I/S & a 2000 STD, Owned both for over 30,000 miles and are basically stock,They will both start without the enricheners, but if you touch the throttle they will die, Both need to warm up a minute or two before you can ride away. been that way as long as I've owned them, I have a buddy's 97 Tourer (stock exhaust and air filter) in the same garage at the same temp. You can start this bike with no choke, blip the throttle to any RPM (no stutter or hesitation) and can ride off immediately.  What is your best guess as to the difference, Jetting? idle mixture? or just one of those things that make you go HHMMMM?

A cold start (room temperature) requires a slightly rich mixture.  If your mixture is correct, and the '97 is slightly rich, you will see this result.  Just to be sure, you should go over your vacuum hoses and other areas prone to vacuum leaks.

my 99 standard does that same thing, needs a little choke in the mornings.

My 97 and 99 exhibit the characteristics you outline exactly.
I have cleaned, tuned and set both identically, so it is no variance in those items.

The 97 is just richer at idle and that is the difference.

If it is an issue, try opening the pilot air screws by 1/4 turn at a time and see if that does what you want.

Not really an issue just can't believe how well the 97 starts and runs when cold, I did open the pilots on the 2000 and it did not help, All three have new fuel and vac lines, all connections tightened and checked. All three run great.  we have compared notes on the bikes and the 97 gets lousy mileage compared to the 99 & the 2000. going to pull the plugs and compare when I get time, There has just been a lot of tire kicking this winter. Thanks for the replies.

Without posting what changes have been made to each bike it's not a practical exercise to postulate why all the bikes react differently to starting techniques.

My 97 Tourer always seemed to require the choke on any cold start until I changed the pilots to 38's. After the rejetting it'll start and run well without any choke.
