I have a 2000 Interstate. I am going to replace my petcock. I need to drain some fuel out of the tank. What is the easiest way to do this? - (without going out for a ride)
The stock petcock is vacuum operated so I cant just hook up a 3 foot piece of 3/8" fuel line and turn the petcock to on position and drain.
Should i just remove the tank and hold it upside down and let it run out of the gas cap and try to funnel it into a gas can?
Must be a better way...

Actually, yes you can. After you hook up the 3 ft hose, stick it into a container, remove the line from the petcock to the #6 carb, at the carb and apply vacuum, then clamp the line. Open the petcock and the fuel should flow as long as the petcock is functioning normally. Stan

Once I remove the line from the petcock, how do I apply vacuum and clamp the line? Sorry for the dumb questions...

You could siphon it out of the filler opening. That's how I roll...

Siphoning may indeed be easier! To answer your question though, you should be able to suck on the line and get enough vacuum to open the diaphragm, then clamp it and it should remain open. No dumb question except the one not asked. Stan

Why not just remove the petcock and filter screen as planned and let it drain in a can? You can remove the pet rooster if the tank is stood on its nose with out spilling gas. hoser

No, not always. Mine was still in the tank. Had to use needle nose to grab the screen.
You could just set the tank on its nose and leave the gas in it. I did. Had over half a tank. Do it slow or it will come out the vent.
As added security I used teflon tape on the threads. Get the stuff used for fuel fliuds.

Will the regular plumbers teflon tape work ok?
After further research, the regular plumbers teflon tape was not recommended...

I think I will try Permatex High Temperature Thread Sealant 59214. It can be used on oil fittings, fuel fittings, brake and power steering fittings, etc...

I siphoned mine out a few weeks ago...have to get the hose just right to get it all. Use a clear hose so you can see it coming to avoid a lovely drink. I didn't even leave enough to make it 2 miles to the gas station

There is a small o-ring on the petcock. That is what seals the petcock. NO thread dope needed, or wanted, as the threads do NOT seal the gas in. Use a new o-ring if you think there is a problem. MP

If you ordered the whole assembly, it will, along with a new screen. MP in ND If you are using the Honda "cover set" to rebuild the petcock, the screen needs to be ordered seperately.

Oh man. ONE single drop inhaled into the lungs can be fatal. Or so I read 25 years ago, I never siphoned that way again, and I never will.

The "cover set" 16953-MBZ-B51 does not have the petcock o-ring or the screen.

FYI - if you're siphoning gas, use a longer, flexible hose - like 3/8" neoprene. You can insert it almost completely into the source tank, fold over the end, then pull several feet out quickly. You'll pull gas out with the hose, release the folded over end and you've started the siphon without sucking on it. Works for me.

Put a rag on your alternator cover in case you spill any gas. Its been known to cause the chrome to start bubbling off. -RP

Go to Walmart and buy a siphon hose with the squeeze bulb, works great, and not gas in the mouth.

just like you drink through a straw...doesn't need much suction to operate the diaphragm. Once open, crimp the tubing and it will hold the vacuum. I just siphon the gas into a 5 gallon jug.....tygon with a coat hanger taped to it will get the hose down far enough to almost completely siphon out the gas.

Not sure but I think that is an Old wives tale,,, I am sure I inhaled and swollowed more than a few ounces by the time I was 10-12 y/o (nobody told me it would kill me, maybe make me sick a bit but not dead) come on nobody ever said I was a the sharpest tack in the box and I had to get the moped, lawnmower, scooter, minibike or someones car running without any cash for gas or transportation to go get it. I was a kid, but I will probably pay for it when I grow up if that ever happens...

While aspirating "a small amount" of liquid gas into your lungs CAN kill you, it takes more than a drop. Still just about anything can happen in life, so I'm not siphoning that way.

Agreed, I am not gonna siphon with that old method any time soon not if I can help it. Those were some bad memories of my child hood. I think I can still remember that aweful taste. Well after I read what I wrote I hope you did not get the feeling I was downing you at all that surely was not my intention and if you did I appologize.
