Timing Belt Question
«
on:
March 26, 2011, 07:37:40 PM »
How much play should the Timing Belt have while running.
Mine looks really loose when running, it has about 1/2 inch play while motor is off.
Would loosening and retighting of the tensioner be enough to take up the slack or are the belts in need of replacing.
1998 Standard with 63,000 miles.
Any thoughts?
TIA Gregg

"Push the belt lower run midway between the pulleys wlth 2 kg
(4.4 Ib) force. Adjust the tensioner position so that the belt
slack 1s 5-7 rnm (0.2-0.3 in)."
This is out of the service manual. If you adjust the tensioners, you should remove the bolts and re-apply some locktight.
Sounds like yours are slightly lose if you have a 1/2 inch of play, should be around 1/4 "
Do you have the service manual? You can download one somewhere off the board, try doing a search on the home page. I'd suggest reading the pages on re installing the timing belts page 8-27.

So the adjustment of the Tensioners giving the belts 3/16 play is just what the Doc ordered.
Thanks for the advise

Here is the link where the manual is offered. Dag has a very good tech section on his site.
