The Twilight Zone

« on: April 07, 2011, 06:43:21 PM »

A couple of years ago I thought Valks were pricey, but now I see Standards and Tourers going for nearly nothing here in the southeast anyway. Like a 97-2000 with low miles going for $5,000 and less! Now the I/S seems to be consistant holding their value.

PLease tell me I'm wrong and it's just me! I would have thought since this is the finest cruiser Honda has ever made, it would or will be a collector's item! IMHO, Honda has really screwed up and better get it together. No more Valks, VTXs, and their new "cruiser" is the little 1300 Statesman. They are depending on the wing and sportbikes. Look at Yamaha and others, they have a big selection. crazy2

I'm no expert on the matter but I didn't buy my Valk as a collector's item.  I would assume the prices would drop because they are getting older, 8 years out of production.  Seems that happens to a lot of vehicles, even those considered collector vehicles 20 years after they were produced.  In '73, I could have bought one of 3 different '65 Ford Mustangs for $600.  Those same cars in good condition today would be what, $10K?  So, wait another 5-10 years and you may find the Valkyrie has a higher value.  I don't mind either way as I know it is a great bike, one of the finest ever made and I am the only owner this particular Valk has ever had.  I have it in my will for my oldest son!

Yeah I didn't buy mine for a collectors item, but to ride. If I wanted a collector's bike, I would buy an old Harley or Indian or something. I just can't believe how fast they have dropped in price. Smiley

All bikes "bottom out" at some price. Then, a select few can appreciate to an amazing amount, depending on a lot of factors, quantity and desirability being the biggest determinants. There were a LOT of Valks made, in comparison to some other "collector" bikes, plus, the longevity of them, means a lot are still on the road. I have personally NEVER seen a Valk, "retired" due to old age - almost every one of them has been wrecked. I foresee mild fluctuations in price, but I doubt seriously that a Valk will bring $20,000 again, in our lifetime, unless it's really "special" - IOW, someone put $40,000 into it to get the $20,000 out of it. Again, you never know, but that would be my guess.
My '86 GoldWing had evened out, at right around $4500 when I sold it, for $6,000. But, it was "as new" having just gone through a motor out, stripped of tupperware major cleaning. Just about the best looking 1200 out there. Sans a bunch of chrome. But, that same exact bike would get just around the same amount, or a little less, 8 years later.
I remember when I had my R50 Beemer (~13,500 made) -  they could be had, VERY nice, for around $7k. But then, in the early/mid '80's, the German's had all money, and the older BMW bikes were pretty much non-existent in Germany, so they were paying premium for the R's, and shipping them back to Germany. Needless to say, my fully restored Beemer brought a HUGE amount of money!! I understand that since, the bottom has dropped out of that market.
There's really no reason a '60's muscle car, should be able to bring $200K, but they do...again, supply and demand, and they'll NEVER be able to build another '69 SS Camaro.

I bought my Valk because I like the Valk. Hopefully, I'll be able to ride it until I can't ride any more. But, when I first sat on one, I couldn't afford to buy one. Now that I CAN afford to buy a new Wing, I choose to ride the Valk...

The riding pleasure my 2001 standard has given me is priceless.  It has close to 80,000 miles and I bought it new.  I certainly do not aim to keep it as a collectors item but to ride it and ride it and ride it

I bought my first Valkyrie in June 1998 ....I can remember the local Honda dealership still having 97,98 ,99 models on the floor around late 2000 or early 2001....I don't think anyone will be getting rich on Valkyrie's unless it's folks like Big Mike who has the parts to keep them glued together.

Thanks for your input Roger. No I didn't buy mine for a collectors item but to ride. It is just sad for me to see one of the finest machines Honda has ever made  sell for nearly nothing. I see standards and tourers go for 4-$5k some with low miles and lots of accessories! The I/S seems to hold it well.

Yeah, I can't believe what the old SS/Z-28 Camaros, Chevelles and all the other muscle cars I used to own are going for. I could've been a rich man if I only knew! But like most of us, collector's item wasn't in my vocabulary, just burning rubber and chasing girls! 2funny 2funny crazy2

unless you buy it, put it in a climate controled sealed storage unit, it's going to go down in value for about 50 years, then, they'll go up.  had my father bought a cobra when i was born, and put it in storage, he would have been able to sell it for $5 million dollars when i turned 40.  not a bad investment i think.  thing is, he had the money to do it then too.

enjoy life, ride, if you come across a bargain, buy it!!

I consider the Valkyrie to be the best value for the dollar that is available today. I bought mine because when I rode a friends I found an experience that fit me and I knew I had to have one. My only hope is that we can continue to find the parts needed to keep them on the road for a long time.

Hef you just hit the nail on the head. I am new to the Valk and love it and . I am concerned about the availability of parts. Rattlebars has closed and a lot of sites are saying something like" this part is discontinued or no longer available".

The very same thing happened when I bought a 1975 850  Norton Commando before there was an internet. It got to where I couldn't order parts and had to sell her. Cry

It's not just valkyries that are dropping in price, all high dollar "toys" such as bikes, boats, rvs etc. are seeing price reductions. In todays economy people are having to sell, and are slashing their prices pretty low to undersell the competition. I hope I never have to sell mine, but if I did I would part it out, parts are still bringing good money, especially the out of production accessories.

It is all how you look at it. Personally I think the Valk has done pretty well when you consider the economy.

I sell real estate, our market is down 25% in the last 4-5 years, and it is down 40-50% in some areas. Compare the Valk to that and it seems the interstates have come down 10-15%, and the standards and tourers maybe 15-20%.

If you look at it like that, they have held their prices quite well. Just like real estate, the stock market, and classic cars, they will come back up unless we have a total collapse of the economy. If that happens, we are all SOL, we will be waxing them in our garages with no fuel to run them.

Value has a lot to do with how many people want something. Go to an Inzane. We are a bunch of old to middle age farts. You don't see kids lusting after this bike. Numbers are small, value declines.

I read article as the Boomers age and die collectable car values will decline. The next generation did not go through muscle cars and 24 cent gas. Different era,

i have been in the retail auto business for years. SO I watc values on Valks for years.
In 2000 they took a dive when honda cleared out all gl1500 stock. That lasted for a couple of years.

This is the issues I used to negotiate my deal on my valk last fall.

Its 11 years old., books for 6000 dollars, and who would finance it for longer than 3 years .And it was October

my gut wanted 9000. that was down from 12000. I am sure he had more in the bike. I paid 7000 for it. a 2000 tourer with 13k miles, chrome rims, differential , cobras, centerstand and more. and all the take off parts.

I didnt buy it to sell it and I hope it remains in my collection along with the Rune for the duration.

In watching values i think the peak in May and June.. Nice low mile valks will command a good price.
I Just dont see them taking a significant dropp ever.

Looking at what's on E-Bay right now doesn't seem to indicate that there has been a significant drop in values.

You can buy 2003-2005 1100cc Shadows cheaper that you can buy 98-99 Standards.

That says something.

If they ever do start to drop that's when I can add others to my collection.  cooldude

I didn't actually "buy" my valk,,,horsetraded an 84 vette for it..with a lot less in it than the blue book of the bike, but retail price listed were within a few bucks of each other at $7100 so we traded straight across...there is NO WAY I will ever be convinced that I didn't get the best end of that deal..I have also notice the IS is indeed demanding more money than the std/tourer...must be the tunes..since I seldom fire up my car/truck radio, I think I'd like to find a tourer to park next to my std...

Let the prices drop, it's great news for us.

I'll never sell my I/S, but might like to buy a Standard or Tourer to ride in town, and another one wrecked or dead for parts. A decent parts bike would be cheaper, at $5000 than buying the parts as they break down in the future.

The Valkyrie market is a buyer's market; far fewer buying than selling. If they don't ride them and want the space in the garage back, well that's good news for those of us that want to ride them.

And as a bonus, insurance is cheaper, and who wants to steal an unpopular motorcycle?

Here in the great state of [six months of winter] M.N. The best time to be looking for any summer toys is fall. People will buy in the spring and sell because they did not think ahead about storage. Did i tell any one here that i have two pole sheds and a three car garage. It is hard to belive on my income but i am always looking for a deal.

I invest in the stock market and others but not in motorcycles. I posted this because a couple of years ago they seemed high and standards and tourers seemed to have dropped a lot since then. But now I've noticed all bikes have dropped in price- some more than others.

I bought mine to ride and have fun and that's just what I'm doing! cooldude

Think the value is dropping......Take a look at the '97 Black and Yellow that sold on April 5th for $14,000.
