Heard a scraping noise on my 99 std. the other day.  While the eng is running, Clutch in or out, in or out of gear, speed changes with revs.  I can hear it when im in the seat, but not when Im down looking for it. I cant hear it while riding but thats because the cobra 6x6's  I tried the old hose to your ear trick and the only noise that came close was from directly under the engine about the middle of the block.  I know this is an odd one because i dont have any Ideas as to where its coming from, so I guess Im looking for other problems that ya'll have stumbled on that might make a scraping noise similar to the tiny bit of info that I can describe with this keyboard thingy.

That seems to be a common problem on Valkyries. Evil

Ok here's some more info after some more tinkering.  the noise is present when stopped, Not present until warmed up, (didn't hear it when I started it up thismorning, heard it after a 30mn ride into work) Started after a 250mile ride, half of which was in a HARD rain.  Started about the same time as a pulsing headlight, but now the noise is there and the pulsing headlight isn't.... uglystupid2

Maybe something in the alternator?? Brushes or bearings?? Just a half educated guess. From what I've read here I don't think they are a common problem tho. How many miles on it?

16k but I refer to them as HARD miles due to the lack of care and general maintenance from the previous owner.  Cry she has spent her entire life being stored outside usually under a tarp  tickedoff
Ive had her for just over a year now and its been an uphill battle of fixing one thing after another to play catch up on her abuse. TO try to eliminate the alternator as a suspect ( or to pinpoint ti as the problem) can i get the bike up to temp and then pull the alternator and still run the bike???

you'll have to cover the hole where the altenator goes in to keep from spraying oil everywhere..but yes you could run it for a minute or 2 without the altenator.

Pulsing headlight would indicate a modulator or something like that!   Wouldn't normally think that is related to the scraping problem.

Make sure the starter button is working freely. This could be the problem if it isn't returning fully to the rest position.

The hose is the best thing for finding sound sources and the alternator is easily accessible so that sound not present a problem to listen to and determine if the scraping is coming from there.

Like I said, check the starter button on the handlebars.

The scraping could be the starter being constantly energized. If you were to put a hand on the starter motor after a while of this scraping I would think it may be too hot to touch! That would be a tip off if the starter circuit is in the mix!

no headlight modulator. the pulsing started after last saturdays rainy ride.  It goes away above idle. I guess I should probably do the starter switch maintenance anyway, considering this ladys previous mistreatment....

I'll put my $$$$ on the nag in the 5th race today.

Her name is Alternator.

Sounds like the brushes are on their last ghost, and or the bearing, the pulsating sounds like the alternator putting out then cutting out.  Like when ya have a low battery and jab the throttle everything gets brighter.

I know it can be a pain in the arse to pull the alternator, but I'd pull it and take it to an electrical shop who works on them and give it a test on their equipment.

The starter button shouldn't have anything to do with the pulsating.

Just this old studs opinion for what it is worth.   It's kind of like a belly button, everyone has one.   LOL.

God bless the Spell checker.
