While we're on the subject, do you raise the tank front and rear? If front only, how does that effect miles to reserve?

Here's a spacer for raising the Tank that allows you to put those "stacks" on your carb tops without worrying about them hitting your tank... the stacks are just for looks, but BigBF sez the spacer also improves air flow into the air box... http://www.bigbf.com/bigbf_shop/sale/v-stack/index.htm-Mike

It helps you to see that big shiny chrome gas cap better and put the glare from the sun directly into you eyes. Other than that, nothing.

Keep in mind that if you raise the tank for what ever reason, the tank will no longer be supported underneath where the rubber supports are attached to the frame under the tank. There for putting possible stress on the front or rear mounting positions of the tank. I use the spacer to gain clearance over the V-Stacks and I also took an old radiator hose cut to size and zip tied it to the frame under the tank to allow for the missing support. Yes the space gives more air to the Air cleaner, have not noticed any difference from my bike to my friends Valk if I hit Reserve earlier or not. Mileage varies from 19 mpg to 41 mpg. It all depends on demand of the throttle.

I found the 1/8 thick neoprene at work in a sheet material, we use it for gaskets and such. Here in Michigan it can be purchased at a place called Exotic Rubber and Plastic, (no, its not a kinky type place but an actual automotive supplier of all things that seal)

Looks like a piece cut out of the sidewall of an old car tire would work. I wonder about the longevity of superglue though. My experience with it is that it works real well for a while, but after a year or two it lets go. That should only be a potential problem during tank removals. Once the tank is mounted, the rubber isn't likely to fall off. Thanks for the idea, it beats my solution: cut up pieces of a swimming pool "noodle" that kids play with.

As far as the effectiveness of raising the tank for more air, it does work. When I first installed a carbon fiber Supertank years ago the bike would run fine until under a load at higher rpms. Then it was like the choke was on , black smoke and no power. Shimmed the front of the tank with a couple of extra rubber tank mount spacers and problem solved. Not sure it would help with any power increase with a Honda tank but more air will be diverted under the tank.
