Pretty bad when a bike almost cuts a van in half, apparently the Harley rider was drunk.

I was unaware of different levels of being killed. Severely killed...as opposed to mostly killed...or moderately killed? Drinking and riding. What a shame this had to happen, but as long as people don't think first, this kind of news will happen every day. I used to be one of those people, until I got a reason to stop. Never had an accident, thank God, but could have ended up a stat pretty easily. I think these accidents should be documented and shown to every new driver. Might help some.

Yeah, I saw that, too.  Looks like News9 needs to more carefully proof their captions.   My guess was they originally had decided to reverse the order they had originally listed the victims.

It may be the first motorcycle accident I've seen reported in which they didn't mention whether he was wearing a helmet.

Oh, look!  They've fixed it.

There was a statistic on alcohol related MC accidents and fatal consequences, It was very frightening, I do not remember it well enough to quote it.
It would be nice if everyone got home safe!

Bad part is, seems like a daily occurrence in Pinellas county, and the St petersburg area.  But about 80% seem to be the idiots on crotch rockets. That is why I call them zip & splats.

Unfortunately we see that here in Pinellas County frequently. There are MANY bike events almost every night of the week. Wednesday & Saturday are the big ones. Most are at bars and many go to all the events up & down the beach "bumping the bars"...  bikini's and liquer flowing. Most of the fatalities I see are drinking & riding and Harley related. There is also a high rate of the sportbike riders which is usually North a little in the country on the better riding roads. Those guys usually wind up having powerfull machines and "out-ride" their ability on unfamiliar roads, or try to keep up with their buddies. It's a shame, very populated area. You really must be alert. I've lost several freinds in the last 5 years here. 4 of my old Valkyrie rideing group, which have all been envolved in accidents and no longer ride. Cry I noticed I use my airhorns everytime I ride.We used to have a proud group of slick machines that turned heads everywhere we rode. Now i have to travel all around the State to ride with other Valkyries. Undecided

That is true.  But I bet drinking the alcohol helped him to speed.  That is like saying the 100' fall did not kill him, it was the sudden stop that did!  Grin

this weekend is the (was the) flood run along the mississippi.  several years ago my old boss was riding with a group of guys when a crotch rocket went flying by.  about ten minutes later they came into a small town, ambulances and police everywhere, that same kid hit the back of a minivan and put his cycle up to the front dash board. he was completely sobber. was that is......

but to flip that van over, wow!  i'm pretty sure that the cabie didn't run the red light, he drives for a liviing......

The unfortunate part to this story is that due to the outcome of this crash we will never truly know what happened.  yes we know he was drunk but that doesnt mean he did the wrong here. We all know that all it takes is 1 cage to pull out on front of you and at the very least you're needing a  new pair of shorts. Should he have been riding drunk ? NO,  but that may not be why he's deceased either.

Sounds like he was going really fast too.

"Police said the collision of the two vehicles was so hard, the motorcycle cut into the car and flipped it over."

To do that, the MC was really moving.

So, he was drunk, and driving real fast.  Sounds like he had several choices that evening, and he took all the wrong ones.

Now, did the car pull out in front of him, or visa-versa?  I do not know.

But if he was sober, and going the speed limit, he may well have been able to avoid the accident.  Maybe not.

I just know, when on my MC, I better take care of me.  Because, whether right or wrong, I WILL lose in a car/MC accident.

That said, it is a very sorry thing, and I pray for his family.  They will never be the same again.

God Bless them all.

Maybe I'm just too niave, but why drink when your on a motorcycle?

I had a drinking problem years ago. I  admit that the first time I got drunk and rode my bike I crashed. But then I was nineteen (young, stupid, and easily mislead).

Riding is a "HIGH" in itself.  cooldude

Its the speed, most likely. Last year one accident (not really accident, but that's what we call them) the cage driver admitted pulling out in front of the crotch rocket. It was just outside of downtown, lots of traffic and cars parked everywhere. The cage driver, in his 70's, said he saw the motorcycle coming, but as it was 1 1/2 blocks away he thought it was safe to make his turn.

What the cager didn't know, however, was that the bike was travelling at an approximated 110 KPH in a 50 KPH zone.

We all know they don't see us at the best of times, why add stupidity into that mix?

Its strange reading all this as I am recovering from a low speed motorcycle accident.  I was a wild boy back in the day, didn't have a crotch rocket. in 1976 we called them cafe racers i guess, but my 750/4 Honda was quick enough for the streets of The Bronx. I haven't drank since 1981, and I guess the point in all this is how profoundly lucky we are when we get up and walk away.
A nice lady said she was sorry and she didn't see me and was nice enough to stop. The gravel on the road did not help either. Why compound all that with alcohol?
