I think I really blew it tonight. I disassembled the side stand switch and spring because it was assembled wrong after a rebuild by a dealer.

Here's what I did, I couldn't figure how the spring attached and tried a few different ways of attaching it. Long story short, I broke one of the plastic tabs off the switch that the little metal piece that has the screw that hold the switch in place fits into. I don't think the switch will rotate without it, will it?

Do I need to purchase a new switch? How hard is it to install the whole thing? Where does the other end connect to?

I leave on a long trip on Friday so I must get this thing repaired. Where can I buy a switch if I do need it and have it overnighted?

I messed with the one thing that will keep the bike from running if I don't get it fixed.

I still don't know where the spring attaches at the switch and how to steer it clear of the switch.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the first thing that comes to my mind is this:  the dealer probably broke it/rigged it back together, and didn't say anything about it to you......that's par for the bulk of them.

Not that i am condoning this but the switch can be disabled or jumpered so you can make your trip but be careful because now the bike will start in gear with the side stand down.

I got mine from pinwall for $4.95. I ran 2 years without it with no probs. It is a bitch to hook back up but with 2 long thin srew drivers it wasnt all bad. 15 min or so. Like you the hard part is putting it on the stand. I had a non oem side spring bolt that made it a little harder but got it. If you continue on your trip you will have to nut the wires for it to work right. My tourer I had 2 wires together and the other was separate. Its easy to find which ones by trial and error.

I do have a I/S, used, full cable. Yours if you want it.

Like said above in a pinch you can tie two of the three wires together. I think the 2 green one and it will start but will also start in gear.

I broke my switch a couple years ago with my lift.  I always start with the clutch in  or in neutral.  Never been a problem.

I'm lost on how the spring attaches. The dealer installed a double nut on a bolt and the spring attached to the bolt on the yoke piece. I don't see that on the blow up of the switch and spring.

How does the spring attach to the little yoke piece? Which end attaches to the side stand and how does it attach to the Yoke?

If I understand right, you managed to break the switch while removing the kickstand spring?

I while back my kickstand spring achor bolt broke while riding & launched the spring, popping the switch off the kickstand as it went.  It is kind of a winpy shoulder bolt design, & if it gets loose, it will snap off under the spring tension.  I rigged a hardware store bolt & a piece of old fashoned screen door spring until I could get the parts.

Anyway, if I remember right this assembly is broken down on two separate microfish pages & I was confused about it at the time also.  A shop manual or a look at someone else's Valk would be helpful.

Here's a hint - Search for installing the spring by streching it out with a come-a-long somewhere besides your bike.  Between two trees maybe.  Instert nickels between the spring coils.  If you can find an old post on this it may tell how many nickels you need - it is an exact number.  Then you just put it on the bike & pull the nickels out.

Long end with small hook goes on the bolt, short end with the large hook goes on the side stand.

Stretch out the spring just enough to slip 12 nickels into the coils. Then just lay it in place & pull out the nickels

I will have to look at another Valk because I still don't know where the spring hooks at the switch. But, I now know the small end connects there.

I'm wondering if I am missing the hooking point because I did loose the spring last summer when I dropped off a 6" road edge. This has to be obvious so I must be missing that point.

I will order a new switch this am. but would love to find another valk to look at just to see what the heck I'm missing

Okay, I'm not completely stupid. I located a bolt that is completely sheared off with a lock nut up under the frame. I will try and release the lock nut and remove whats left of the bolt. I need to find out what the bolt # is and order one.

I don't have a manual, any idea what or where to find a # or what it looks like in case I can buy one at the hardware store?

I will order a manual today. I downloaded one once but lost it when my computer crashed.

I might have the bolt number. I will look and post if I find the number. I bought a metric bolt and used that for a couple of years.

I believe this is the one you need, double check before you order.

With the help of KingBee, I ordered two new bolts. One for now and one so I don't have to order it again. Also, so I can travel with one, just in case.

Thanks for all the help. I was really worried my trip would be on my VTX not my first choice, the Valk.
