I couldn't agree more with this writer.  I think the worse part was having to pick out our own switch for Mom. Dad it wasn't a problem... He used a belt.

We did get out of one whuppin though and it is still a family joke.

We had done something and were on the verge  of a visit with the belt. My Dad (Daddy in the South) gave us one last opportunistic warning  to straighten up.  When he asked:

Do you know what is going to happen if I take this belt off?

My sister piped up and said, Yes Sir, Your pants will fall off...

Well, Daddy had a great sense of humor and was laughing so hard he couldn't whup any of us.

Daddy's been gone for 10 years this July...I still miss him everyday! Whuppin's and all!

I figure the whompins I got and the ones I gave my kids kept us all out of jail or the house up the river......

It sure as 7734 hurt at the time, but, I'll tell ya what, we sure as 7734 didn't repeat it anytime later or in the future....

My one daughter was a mouthy, lip sticked lil B, and she thrived on it.    One day she muttured something under her breath and grandma heard it......   Grandma never said a word, she just up and back handed her across the mouth so hard it rattled the kids teeth.......

You never saw a young lady straighten up and act right so darn quick.....    Today, she is a wonderful wife and mother to 2 of my grand babies, girls no less........

I never got spanked much (probably why I turned out so bad  Wink) but I remember one day
I got my dad's last nerve by digging holes in the yard. After he spanked me, I looked
up at him and told him it didn't hurt, boy that frustrated him, he wasn't willing to spank
me any harder...

+1 with the Belt...did they teach that stuff in school back then? Between my brother and I, it was a beatin everyday..mostly just goofy boys do what we did...i think that is how my dad stayed in shape... Grin

I think the world could use a few more belts... coolsmiley

I won't comment on the use or non use of belts or switches as some people don't have the ability to know the proper time and circumstances they should be used. But in every case kids need to know that there are consequences for there actions, some more severe than others. They need to know that the consequences will come swiftly and consistently. To do less is a disservice to them.
