Alright.......we had a discussion a while back about a friend of mine that ended up with an over filled Valkyrie crankcase. As reported to me at the time, he dumped in 4 qts as he always did and thought he was good.
Turns out he bought oil at a different place and didnt notice the jugs were 1L jugs instead of 1qt. OK, so that explains that.......BUT.......
Today I did an oil change. Oil change #3 since changing to Mobile 1 in the 5qt jugs. OK, unless my math really stinks......3X using 4 out of 5 qts should leave me with 3 qts left over after all is said and done. Two times doing it.....2 qts left over.
So the first time:
-I measured 4 qts out of the 5qt jug, put the rest up (UNMEASURED)
The second time
-I did the same then poured the remaining in with the first jug. So that should be around 2qts in that jug (STILL UNMEASURED)
Today:
-I use the old jug first and out comes 1qt, then 2qts, then 12oz more. So between the first two jugs there was an average of 6oz EXTRA, yep free oil! can you believe it. So, even though my friend misread, my original warning is valid. Dont trust the big jugs like you do the qt jugs........there can be extra.
and just because I wanted to be anal this time.....I actually pulled out the dipstick and it was perfect to the line as always with exactly 4 qts

I don't want to start a flame war here, but I still have a hard time believing that quality (or QUANTITY) control is so lacking that the oil companies are adding almost 5% extra. My reasoning is (in part) that my daughter works as an engineer for General Mills (they make Cheerios among other products). She tells me that General Mills overfills their cereal boxes by tenths of a percent, to ensure that no product is underweight. She also tells me that if there was a way to increase the accuracy of the filling process to reduce the overfill by even one tenth of one percent, it would amount to savings in the millions of dollars.
Now, my daughter told me this one or two years ago, so I may be slightly misrepresenting the exact numbers. But, I am sure the overfill was nowhere near 5%. Additionally, I would think it would be even easier to be more precise on a fluid such as engine oil as compared to Lucky Charms.
I also remember that I once mated two 1 quart bottle caps together using JB Weld and drilled out the centers. I would then screw two "empty" oil bottles together so one "empty" bottle could drain into the bottom bottle and I collected what seemed to me to be quite a bit of oil from the "empty" bottles. However, I admit that this phenomenon would not account for 6 ounces clinging to the walls of a gallon (or 5 quart) bottle.

I believe this is much to do about nothing Please go ride your bike and clear your head. On the other hand I don't think Mobil is giving away that much oil if they are I am going to start buying more of it.I think we all need better weather to ride are valks and quit coming up with these things in are free time. I then when not have any free time to respond and problem solved (at lest for me)

I run into these kinds of measure amount all the time in Canada.
A US gal jug of milk (3.7 Liters) is labeled as 4 Liters of milk. 1 qt bottles labeled as 1 liter.
I think you might have gotten a 4 Liter jug of oil, that was labeled as 4 qts. Most likely you have paid for the actual amount of oil (4L) in the jug, but have been mistakenly told there was less there.

yes I would need your address, but due to HomeLand Security policy I can only send less than 1oz at a time....so Ill have to sent 15 or so ziploc baggies full of oil over a extended period of time so we dont alert the terror watch folks.

I know-i know apples and oranges. Actually oil and taters. Back in the 70s when i was hauling produce- i hauled an awful lot of potatos out of colorado. I had more than one grower tell me that a 100# sack of spuds had to weigh in(at the rcvr) between 103#to 105#- or the load would be turned down. I did run into that turned down crap more than once at Safeway in dallas tx. I know-not oil or valk related. But on another note the weather is crappy here in the ozarks this day. RIDE SAFE.

Maybe you should buy another 5 quart jug, and measure it directly. That would put the matter to bed much better than all this indirect stuff.

as for the confusion on the amounts as far as i know the bottles are filled by weight not volume..when i buy bulk oil it come in a 55 gal drum.. i get the same oil in the same type of barel..and when i look inside its never at the same height...cant explain it other than it depends on the manufactures run that day....
