I have no experience at all with rider to passeneger com gear. Could someone enlighten me on an economical way to this short of two cans and a string. I open up a motorcycle catalog and get confused with all the terminology. I just want to be able to chat with the passenger on trips, no stereo or high tech stuff.

A couple of years ago, we bought the Scala rider team set, and have had no problems with them. I think we paid some where between $200-250 for it, but it sure beats yelling at each other.

We're very happy with our Scala Rider Q-2 system. It's kinda weird though hearing my wife's comments while catching a leak at pit stops though...

I have a Baehr system, its pricy but it is adaptable, the system can talk rider to passneger and be adapted to take, CB, Ipod, Navigation etc...also water resisitant (I do not say proof because there is no such thing), like I said its pricy but worth the investment, I have had mine now for 3 years without a hicup, I have ridden in torrential storms where a car wash seems dry, all over the world and no porblems. A buddy of mine from the German VRCC has his now 11 years and its still running strong
Here's the link to the company, http://www.baehr.net/

when she hits me on the head it means slow down

hittng me multiple times means stop looking at some pretty girl in the next lane

hitting me in the kidneys means time for bathroom break

patting my stomach means she is hungry

poking me while pointing at flowers means pull over so she can pick this or that as she is an herbalist and you never know when she wants to gather some wild flower or whatever

helmet hitting between my shoulder means she is sleeping and I should try not to be doing evasive manuevers just for fun

these signals have been around since rj was a pup and they work for less than 300 bucks\

\that said we have j&m in the helmets now  2001 interstate

if I turn off the volume I have quiet

she may still use the other signals anyway YMMV

We used the Scala system when we first bought ours.  Bought it off ebay for cheaper than we could buy at any store.  There is a new version out now, so might be able to find the older one cheaper.  It has Intercom, MP3 jack, Bluetooth for phones, and FM Radio (never got that to work).  We since upgraded to J&M CB.

We have the scala team set also, it works well.
Along with the rider to passenger you also get blu tooth cell phone, plus mp3 player input, or you can hook it up up to your gps through blu tooth.

I also bought mine on e-bay for less than $200 (don't remember exactly)
The only pain is not forgetting to charge the battery after a long day's use.

I don’t remember what you’ve got for a cycle, but if it’s an interstate, all you have to do is install a set of J&M headsets in your helmet and plug ‘em in.  Oh, and don’t for get to turn on your intercom option on the radio.  I just installed a set in my son’s helmet.  It’s really nice to be able to talk to him as we ride.  He thinks it’s the neatest thing since sliced pizza.  You can get a hold of two J&M’s for about $200 off of ebay.

I bought these blue tooth headsets last year for out trip to the Northwest. http://www.amazon.com/Motorcycle-Bluetooth-Multi-Interphone-headsets/dp/B001SUZNGW

They work rider to rider or rider to passenger, we were very pleased with them. Couldn't get them to work with our phones very well but as intercoms they were great out to 200 yards or so.

In continuous use the batteries would die in 10 - 12 hours. We started having the servers put them on charge for us when we would stop and eat. They would last from daylight till just after dark most days that way.

And just a little over a $100 too.

I love my sena SMH-10.  Listen to music and answer call while riding. As well as talk to my wife and 2 others if they have a set.

I'm using the Scala system, as well. The older system was the Q2, the new is the G4. I have a mixture of both - the wife and I have the G4, and the kids all have the Q2 in their helmets. I haven't noticed a BIG drop in the Q2, but there were a lot of places closing them out, for around $150 for the set of two. Might still have a few. A Powerset of the G4's goes for around $300, best price. Once in a while, you can snag one around $200, but it seems more people are looking for them - if one is listed at $100, it's up to $300 almost instantly. But, I keep watching.

I like the bluetooth on it, as I listen to streaming radio stations when on the road, and if I'm within reach of ATT signal, I can get the stream. That's MOST places, but if I can't, I just listen to tunes I have on the phone.

The Scala has better (IMHO) sound than the J&M I had with the Wings. Plus, I like all the features. You can find intercom's cheaper, but from all I have seen and looked at, you get what you pay for...

Just my $.02 - and I just saw the post with the link to MotorcycleGear - used to be New Enough, and that's where I got my Q2 Multiset. Worth every penny, and by far the best price.

+1 on the Scala Rider Q2

I purchased two sets (4 units), for me and my riding buddy and the girls.

Excellent Phone (via bluetooth) and intercom quality.  I can switch from my passenger to the other bike's driver with the push of a button.

The music doesn't bluetooth so we each bought an ipod shuffle (it clips on a strap on the neck curtain of our half-helments).

The built in FM radio is mono-phonic and crap (in my oppinion), so I rarely use it.

Over all I love it.  Cycle Gear puts them on sale periodically.
