After having our alternator go out on us leaving the GOTF, I decided that having a spare will ease my mind quite alot. I'm still grateful that it went out on us in Texas where there is quite a network of helping hands in the VRCC, even on late Sunday afternoon! I think that it was well worth the $200!

Hey 2 Valks I was glad to be the supplier of the alternator. Mark did the hard part running it up to you and assisting with the replacement. Nothing worse than being stranded on a trip.
Thanks for the quick turnaround on the replacement.

I intend to order a spare alternator also. Mine went out in California, Mark and Tinman offered to ship one out to me, but I opted to leave it on the trailer for the return trip home. It has since been replaced by a rebuilt from Ken Heim. Many are worried about u-joint failure, I think that failure is more attributed to riding style. The alternator can go without a warning, can be costly and you can be in no man's land.

Mine dropped out on me while riding the three sister. We babied it back to Fredricksburg for the night. Next day push started the bike at the motel and once at a gas station. Made it all the way into Austin but traffic was gonna kill us as soon as the fan started to kick on so we rented a u-haul truck and bought some tiedowns and came on home. The truck and fuel cost me three hundred bucks. I overnighted an alt. from HDL and with the shipping and all it was 249 bucks. It showed up the next morning and I was running that afternoon.

MARS is an awful lot cheaper than a new one from anywhere I'm aware of. It is a rebuild job, but I'd put in a rebuild from him before I'd put in a factory stock from Honda, even if the price was the same.
When I was blowing alts fast and furious, I burned through one ever ~150 miles. I put one of MARS' in. It didn't survive, but it lasted a LOT longer. It went ~1000 miles. In the high stress environment of my Valkyrie, MARS won the "run to failure" challenge.

I used the goldwing alt. and it was maybe a year and a half ago. If you go to shop talk the wing alt. is shown as a cheaper replacement than the valk alt. works just as good.
